there are many threads in the rba section about using cotton. I have heard people use candlewick but you have to be careful as some of the candlewick is treated with something, (cant remember what) but the ones that are untreated cotton are ok. I would play it safe and just use some of the 100% pure cotton yarns instead. many people use rolled cotton balls, but a good quality silica last longer and doesnt taste too much different.

Cotton wicks (you can get some virgin cotton yarn at wolly or craft stores) that a lot of peep use on this forum. It's like 2 bucks for a life times worth!!!
They will be easier to burn (when there is not enough liquid wicked) and you can not do dry burn.

You should boil it before use to get rid of any machine oil from manufacturing. But some use them without boiling and seems ok.

Taste (some claims to be) better but to each one's own!

Look here for some pictures of what they look like!!!

Cheers

Cotton yarn? Isn't that going to burn?

Cotton works great as a wick as long as you keep it wet. If you let it dry out or try and do a dry burn it will burn and taste nasty. I use cotton balls to make wicks for all my clearo's now and I can't go back to silica now, it just taste awful. When the coil needs a dry burn I just remove the cotton do the burn and then put in a new piece of cotton. Candle wick can work if it is %100 cotton and not presoaked in wax or other things. Most people used rolled cotton, cheese cloth, or cotton yarn. Some people even use bamboo or hemp yarn as wicks.

i am trying some square braided cotton candle wick... boiled... nice shape and firmness.
I also have eko wool, xc nextel, xs silica nextel, twik (eko with cotton yarn core) and silica core threaded eko wool...

cotton ball is the best for instant and clean flavor imo.. but only works in some settings, like small diameter and short wick situations like drippers.
