I use cotton all the time. It works beautifully.

:)

You can use 100% cotton yarn, cotton batting, cheesecloth, or any number of readily available things. You can also combine it with SS mesh just like you would with silica.

There's a long thread on this subject somewhere, though I'm afraid I can't remember the title. If you search "cotton" i expect it will pop right up.

My concern would be that cotton burns. If you are not careful you could be inhaling goodness knows what if your wick dries out. Better to stick with silica or stainless unless you are marooned on an island and need to rip up your jeans to keep vaping.

I use cotton almost exclusively it wont burn if you do not let it go dry.
here is the thread Kropotkin was talking about http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/284030-wick-materials-safe-vs-dangerous.html
breathing Burning Silica poses much more of a threat then cotton.

I tried cotton yarn and didn't like it, couldn't get it to work right. Kept getting mixed results with SS mesh, and silica doesn't wick well at all for me. I'm now using 100% cotton balls from Walgreens that I roll into a wick shape, and they work much better. Was like less than $3 for a bag of 100 balls that will last a LONG time. Great wicking, great flavor, can vape the tank dry without a dry hit. My Vivi Novas have sat unused for a few weeks until now, and I'm loving them again.

I can vouch for Aunt Lydia's #10 bamboo crochet thread in the Vivi Nova heads I've rebuilt. I just got an AGA and AGA-S and can't say that I will try the crochet thread in them as it is a different set up, but the worst I can report from the Nova heads was any hint of dryness in the wick will cause it to drop right off.
They tend to last about a couple weeks tops, but nominally two cleanings and they're worn out.

PM me if you need more info, or I can just answer any questions as they come up. I shot a bunch of clips that I intend to make a youtube video, but being that it'd be my first and I don't want to post crap (as well as not owning any editing software) and I can't say when I'll be able to share it :/

Was really diggin' silica wick for a while. Nice and easy to dry burn and clean a coil.

Until I looked at the wick real close one day and found loose fiberglass shards that came off easy in my fingers.

I will never use silica again. Ever.

I will take my chances with burnt cotton rather than glass shards in my throat/lungs from fiberglass shedding.

I started using cotton yarn about two weeks ago on a drip setup. I did the boil, drain, boil thing on about 10' and replace the wick every 3-4 days. I've had the same coil on the dripper since i bought the cotton. Yes, it does burn easier and yes you will taste it right away. If i get even a hint of burn taste i just slide the wick out and put a new piece in.

I do think cotton yarn gives a different taste than silica wick but it might just be that i'm used to the taste of silica wick...

I use 100% organic, unbleached cotton. It only cost me $1.50 for the ball, so it's probably the cheapest wicking material. I never boil mine, though I probably should. Taste isn't really affected by the cotton, but the burning is awful! Do not dry burn though, made that mistake on my first coil. But, as long as you keep the wick wet, it vapes beautifully. I know mine has a tendency to let the newest flavor take over. I can be vaping watermelon one second, drip some root beer on, then drip pomegranate, then go back to watermelon without a single cross, as long as the bowl is empty before I add the new flavor.
