My dentist told me that smoking changes the Flora in your mouth. Once that you quit smoking it takes a few months or longer for it to return to normal. I had issues with bleeding gums when I first started vaping and asked my gum disease doc (can't think of title for life of me:).

That original Listerine works for many things but so does Braggs Vinegar. I have told many about the Braggs and they have been amazed with results.

The Peroxyl that was recommended by someone earlier has worked really well for me whenever I've had any kind of gum or lip sore or injury. I don't know if it has any preventive effect, but it dramatically speeds up healing. Just don't use it every day, as it kills the good bugs as well as the bad, and can lead to thrush if overused.

I had canker sores on and off since I switched to vaping around 4 months ago. Never had a canker sore in my almost 20 years of smoking, so I was quite surprised when I got a few of them and they kept coming back. I was vaping on ego attys and tanks and was finding that I sucking quite hard to get a good vape, which I think caused my canker sores. A couple weeks ago I switched to a bloog and have started to clean my cartomizers and attys weekly with an ultrasonic cleaner. So far, so good, I haven't had a canker sore since.

I have had my GOGO for 3 days now and have a canker soar in my throat which is hard to swallow. I also have another canker soar in my mouth. I think I'm going to buy a pack of Cigarettes until this goes away. Today is 6/12/2011. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Someone else here on ECF suggested to me to try "Colgate Peroxyl" which is an oral cleanser. It took 2-3 days but it did help. Now when I get the first inkling of a sore, I start rinsing my mouth with it. You can get it at both Walgreens and Walmart.

It's been a couple weeks since I last updated this thread.

I started taking lysine again (1000mg 2x a day) and rinsing with the original Listerine (nasty yellow stuff) daily. When I feel a canker sore coming on, I add hydrogen peroxide to the Listerine. Hydrogen peroxide is the main active ingredient in the Colgate Peroxyl many people have recommended. I noticed it seems to speed up the healing process. Sounds like a lot of work, I know, but it has helped me immensely. Any canker sores I get remain small and heal really quickly.

You can get lysine at Walmart for ~$4, you probably already have the hydrogen peroxide.

Orajel also makes a mouth rinse with hydrogen peroxide. It's cheaper than Peroxyl. It does have alcohol, but it doesn't burn.

The ingredient in SOME Listerine mouthwashes that helps with sores and stuff is Thymol. I wondered what Thymol might be, and found out it's Oil of Oregano. No, it's not the same stuff as the spice. A bottle of wild Oil of Oregano is not much more expensive than a bottle of Listerine, and it will last a lot longer, if you can stand to use it. It does taste like the spice, only on steroids.

Wow, that's interesting, but sounds painful. Seems that from what you're saying you've tried all the conventional treatments (lysine, tea tree etc). Interesting that something in the smoking prevented them.... very strange.

Given it's only been two weeks, maybe they'll go away....and due to detoxing from cigarettes, but in your case it almost sounds like the reverse.

Maybe just keep checking online for some sort of cure that has worked for other people and you'll get lucky. I agree, it's not a reason to start smoking again, but it's got to be very frustrating

My mother started taking vitamins a few years ago and has always sworn by lysine for cankers. I got a canker right along the middle of my lower lip where my lip ring is and where my PV rests on my lip. I took the lysine twice a day for two or so days and it was gone so fast i couldn't believe it.

Hey Libertaria, I had BAD canker sores after vaping for about a month or so on the roof of my mouth (palette). It was so bad i was getting BAD pains in my gums, head, and ears, all at the same time. I went to my dentist, and two doctors, and all of them told me its probably from vaping, and to stop. But I did not believe them as they knew nothing about vaping, and I had already been vaping for a month without these problems. Frinally went to an ENT (ears nose and throat doc), and he took one look at it, and after hearing my situation (had no cigs in a month prior) and immediately told me that it was because of NOT having cigarettes. Seems that when you stop smoking SOME people are very sensitive to the new levels of mucus being created in the mouth and throat area, and vaping makes your mouth dry as it is, so vaping under these withdrawal conditions are what is going to cause these soares. Some can even get the sores as not even a result of vaping, but just from not smoking. It was very suprising. But it past after a few weeks, and have not have it return since!

Years ago I went to a doctor who specialized in quitting smoking and he said that tobacco provides extra alkalinity and so when you quit it takes your body time to re-balance and until then your chemistry will be overly acidic. This can cause canker sores and acid stomach. He recommended using alka-seltzer gold (the kind without asprin) or drinking 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water. You could also brush your teeth with baking soda if you can stand the taste. This might lessen acid stomach and mouth ulcers. It's worth a try...

This sounds like herpentiteis. I botched that spelling all up but its close w/o google-ing it... (ulcerated throat BTW) IDK how related it is to the herpes virus but I had it back when I was 14-15. Hurt like Hell! I dont have herpes -=thank gawd=- but I do get cold sores (simplex 1). I think the doc gave me pills for it but cant remember. Was 20+ Years ago now but I still remember the pain.

There are lot of possibilities that can cause it.
Such as, how's your sleep lately, what you've eaten,... to Behçet's disease.

What are you vaping lately? Too creamy or chocolate?
Try going a little menthol might help.

Vaping gingerbread, cinnamon, and cloves flavors would not be advisable in this condition

I quit smoking 6 months and 1 day ago and my canker sores are still a regular occurance. I used to get them all the time when I was little, along with everyone else in my family, so it may be a genetic thing, but in my 15 years of smoking I don't recall getting a single one. When I was researching them, one cause listed is "smoking cessation".

I have changed my toothpaste, tried different mouthwashes, drink lots of water, and I only vape tobacco flavors. I can relate to feeling depressed, they effect every aspect of my day to day life, can't eat (tiny bite chewed on one side of your mouth while moving your jaw and tongue as minimally as possible), have to drink everything through a straw, brushing your teeth hurts, talking hurts, smiling hurts, and it hurts to kiss my hubby and kids. None of them have ever had a canker sore so I don't think it is contagious/virus related. Surprisingly enough, vaping is one of the few things that doesn't irritate them!!

I have yet to find a pattern for when they occur, but they get worse for about 10 days of hell before they start to heal, and they usually come in groups. I have a nasty one about 2 days in on the inside of my lower lip, and I can feel a bump on the inside of my cheek and another on the inside of my gums where my tongue is, that will both most likely be huge sores within the next couple of days.

There are some great suggestions in this thread and I am making a shopping list of everything for next time I go into the city. It is nice to know that there are others out there who have had success treating theirs. Personally I feel like mine are getting worse/occuring more frequently and I am willing to try just about anything to be free from them (besides going back to cigarettes!!)

Salemgold is on to something. My wife has bad gums and smoked for years. The thing is she never had any of the systems that went with the bad gums (bleeding, pain etc.) The dentist said it was because she smoked. Apparantly there is something in cigarettes that masks the system of gum disease. Now that she is vaping her gums often hurt and bleed when she brushes. So maybe whatever it is that masks the gum disease also stops the sores!

This is an intresting thread, as I have been getting cankers since starting vapeing/ stopping analogs and was about to start searching the forum about this.
I got cankers as a kid, often, so I realized I had a pre-disposition, not as bad as the OP.
I have been attributing my recent outbreaks to possibly being a PG sensitivity manifesting in a way my body has a predispotition and have been relateing the sores to where my PV has been being used (side of mouth etc.), or when I may have flooded my carto and had stuff spill/splatter into my mouth.

What I have been doing...
try to not overfill my carts/cartos to limit nic contact to mouth tissue, just incase it is an irratent.
Phaseing out my PG juices, no certanty this has any real impact but sores seem to go away when vapeing VGs.
Takeing B12 sublingual- from my admittedly limited reserch, along with vitamin D (which I am already takeing) are the only thing that had clinical tests that imply they help treating canker sores (lysen is used often to treat canker sores, but have only been clinicaly shown to work on cold sores. If Lysen has worked for you in the past, by all means continue what works for you).

I'm now recovering from an outbreak now, but a 80%PG bottle I have been useing, got it at a great deal, was just finisged and started my 100% VG. Proof? no, but does seem a little coincedental.
