Can't get the hang of it.

Hello peeps,

I bought the joyetech Egrip 2, i read through everything but i still feel like i'm doing something wrong. No matter what i do, i get insane spitback, vape smells like burnt rope/hair and i have no clue what i'm doing wrong.
I have the 0.25 notchcoil in it on "Power" mode and Temp on ss316 250 degrees celcius.

Did you prime the head before use?
What Pg/Vg ratio are you using?
What nic mg/ml?
Are you DTL or trying to MTL inhale?
What air flow setting?
What power range are you using?
Have you tried lowering the w & slowly working up?
Have you tried lowering the temp to 200c & slowly working up if needed?

Just one other point, you say you're in "Power" mode and then 250C for a ss316 coil. You can't be in power and temp control mode at the same time. The only coil they provide for TC is a 0.5 ohm 316L coil, not the 0.25 ohm notch coil.

I took it to mean OP is sometimes using in power and sometimes in TC? But maybe I'm wrong.

I hate to point out that the eGrip did have it's issues. Doesn't mean it can't be fixed but I believe some of these problems are at least partially endemic to the mod. I don't have one though so maybe that's not quite right, I just know it had some stupid fiddly problems. Hopefully someone with more experience with that device will be able to help once you clarify a few points.

Set the watts to 20w - 40w, I'd suggest 20w - 25w, this is ramp up time / how fast it heats the head to temp.
Set it to ss TC mode, adjust temp to 190c / 380f, take a few vapes.

Adjust temp up/down to find a vape quality you like.

Adjust watt/power to increase or decrease how fast it reaches temp /ramp up time.

The heads spit, it is one of the many issues joytech has, some folks say they quit spitting after the heads break in, a few tanks.

To help you much more than that we need your answers to the questions already asked.

Does the place you got it from offer any kind of support? I'm sure there are others who can help you out better than I can. That sounds like a complicated unit for someone just starting. One advantage of buying at a B&M shop is they can show you how to use it.

If I were to recommend a model to someone just starting (especially if they smoke) I would suggest the EGO AIO. It's cheap and about as simple to use as they come. If you get too frustrated trying to get this one working right for you, you might consider it. You'll graduate from it eventually if you stay with vaping but it's a good starting point. I wish it had been around when I started.

There are also a few other coil types available for the eGrip. You may just not like the Notch Coils.

"vape smells like burnt rope/hair" -- don't use it except to fix. You may even need clean and air out stunk up components. Sounds like a damaged coil. Try another, preferably with priming and letting it sit (completely off) and then primer puffs (still off).

With any device, you will need to learn what makes it tick. I have bonded with very few atomizers, I'm pretty sure some are useless but also know a lot of it takes tweaking of the device and your technique. I wouldn't suggest using high power to start unless you're young and insist. If you do not pull through enough air for the power setting, it will burn. Low power devices at correct power settings can be satisfying and have great flavor.

The notch coils are the highest power and airflow that comes with it. Lower resistance (ohms or Ω) = more power MOST of the time (by convention more than inherently). The .5 may be better for you; I'd be wanting to try the 1.5Ω (with a decently tight drip tip).

For temperature control at anything less than 80 watts, you will probably have to set the TC ("VT") power level, see manual p. 8. This is important and improves results, including popping/spitback!

The Joytech Egrip 2 uses the same atomizers as the Joytech eGO AIO, the Cubis BF atomizers. I had one of the eGo AIO units a while back and I thought it was a cheap piece of junk. It did nothing but spit hot juice into my mouth, the tip would get hot, it was a very frustrating unit. The Egrip 2 uses the same atomizers. My suggestion would be to step up a little and get away from the all-in-one units and buy something half decent. You'll be glad you did.

You probably burnt the wick in that coil so it is no longer usable.

I had the Cubis tank which used the same coils and found the 1.5Ω clapton coil was the least spitback prone of the three that came with the tank.

I find these topfill tanks go haywire after filling. I recommend firing immediately after filling to burn off the juice flooding the coil. If necessary, you can simulate inhaling on the mouthpiece by blowing into the airflow (not too hard or long - just to simulate little draws) - do that until the loud crackles stop.

You can also sop up fluid collecting in the coil by gently sticking a rolled up piece of toilet paper down the chimney.

I always found those cubis units frustrating. Always needed to stick a piece of rolled up paper towel down the airtube after filling to sop up excess liquid. Might try vaping it upside down for a few puffs (after sopping unless you want liquid in your mouth) to vape the excess out of the coil.

I've never had mine spit but I use the spiral drip tip with it. I like it because it's not fussy. Sometimes I just want to fill and vape and the AIO lets me do just that. The downside comes when it's time to change flavors.
