Can't open my Nautilus....

This thing is on there tight, and it's time for a refill. Anyone else encounter this problem? Sometimes it's really hard to open up even if it wasn't placed on that tight to begin with, and this time I've even tried pliers to no avail...

Anyone with any suggestions on how to get this darn thing open?

I bet a couple of those texturized rubber lid openers that people with arthritis use to open jars and bottles with really jammed on caps and lids would help you open your nautilus - or any other glass tank that you wouldn't want to use pliers on for fear of cracking or breaking it.

Use one to grip the tank body, and the other to twist off the bottom cap. They significantly increase the efficiency of the user's strength by preventing slippage.

You could find them at a grocery store, or any of several hundred places online. If you don't already have a couple in a kitchen drawer, that is.

Mine got stuck on me the other day. I ended up having to use some vice-grips on the bottom end and pliers on the top to get it loose. Be sure not to apply too much pressure with the pliers gripping the top so that you don't crack the pyrex threading.

Happened to me too and more then once.
Use 2 pairs of pliers and don't close it so tightly next time.

I tighten mine up pretty decent and have yet to have an issue getting it apart, although it seems quite common around here. I always worry about over tightening it and breaking the glass or something.

I ran mine under hot, hot water until it loosened up. You can also put it in the freezer for a while. I did buy those rubber things you use to open jars, too, but haven't used them yet (got them after the hot water got it to move).

Run the bottom of the tank under hot water form the tap long enough to soften the seal.

Worked for me.

(P.S Use a dish towel to twist her open)

I wrap mine in a latex glove. Hold onto the base and turn the tank.

Turn the top of the tank to break the vacuum seal. Then the base should turn more easily

Thanks all, didn't have access to anything rubberish that could help with grip, tried the hot water, cold fridge thing, but didn't work. In the end I got it with some old fashioned brute force and pliers, after a few hours.

2 hours I tried... I couldnt get into it... the warm water trick and patience worked for me... hold it tight, and just lean into it slowly.. it will start to come loose... Every time it gets tight like this I find the atty also comes lose from the base...

Me thinks your are tightening things just a wee bit too snug.

On another note, you can also try applying the ever so lightest coat of mineral oil on the bottom tank seal with your finger neat time you perform a re-assembly. I just did a service and tune on mine today.

I had this problem with several tanks... the same thing worked on them all all for me. I wrapped a leather belt around the tank for grip and twisted the other piece with my hand.
