I bet a couple of those texturized rubber lid openers that people with arthritis use to open jars and bottles with really jammed on caps and lids would help you open your nautilus - or any other glass tank that you wouldn't want to use pliers on for fear of cracking or breaking it.

Use one to grip the tank body, and the other to twist off the bottom cap. They significantly increase the efficiency of the user's strength by preventing slippage.

You could find them at a grocery store, or any of several hundred places online. If you don't already have a couple in a kitchen drawer, that is.

On another note, you can also try applying the ever so lightest coat of mineral oil on the bottom tank seal with your finger neat time you perform a re-assembly. I just did a service and tune on mine today.
