This is my PT with a snap on 12v lipo battery attached.

I would like to make the same thing with a large enough capacitor that when charged it would give the current to do at least three puffs. The lower box would be the docking station battery or other DC source. When the top with the capacitor is placed on the dock it would charge the capacitor.

Is this feasible?
What type and size of capacitor?
Can the capacitor voltage be regulated with a step down regulator?

Thanks guys, I knew a battery was basically a large capacitor but as a 70 yr old whose limited electronic studies were more than 50 yrs ago, I just imagined maybe there was something new out there that would work. My lipo does plug into a balancing charger, I am an avid RC modeler and have several chargers, have also replaced all my old wireless tools, dremel, drill, soldering iron, with lipo batteries at a much more reasonable cost than the original batteries , some of which are no longer available.

I hated paying a premium for the Li-ion power tool batteries, so this is what I take with me :)

i don`t understand you..don`t stay around 60 - 80% from a day around a power source? use a lipo/li-ion charger, make the mods with connector for charging and don`t need big pack of batt`s.:) . Simple it`s to use a car battery, you put in your back like a bag and "happy vapping" :D :D:lol::banana:

Ha Ha! You are correct I spend 95% of my vaping connected to a power source. Only when I go fly fishing and am in the middle of the streams do I use batteries. Just Thought it would be cool to use caps instead of batteries and not have the wire tether while doing a few puffs. I still use a battery pack on my belt and a PT clipped to my vest when I fish, I dropped a few battery PVs into streams.

You guys probably know this but Interstate Batteries (and a few others) offer a service where they cut open your tool batts, repack them with new batts and balancers and ultrasonic weld them back together for about 60 - 70% of the cost of a new "factory" batt...I had to get that done for this ancient Milwaukee driver I had and just couldn't bring myself to toss out...

Quigs,
I replaced 15 NiCad sub Cs in the pack shown and it worked fine. For about a year. The Li-ion 18 volt packs (I have four 1.4AH with 5 18650 cells and one 2.6AH pack, with 10 18650 cells) for my cheapo Ryobi tools are better but still don't have the current to drive the circular saw, or the angle grinder (biggest power hog of the set). When a DC motor lugs down the brushes and commutator take a hit. Better tools have replaceable brushes. Most of the Ryobi tools don't (angle grinder does).
In addition to battery life the tools may actually last longer.

BTW, the 6 pack of 38120 LiFePo4 cells cost more than a factory battery pack. But I like it.
With a change in the jumpers I can cut down trees with my 18 volt chain saw, run a VV mod for about 3 weeks and jump start my car :)
Once the car is running again I can charge the pack up with my hobby charger and start all over again :)

Bj, that is some creative modding. Curious... What voltage power cord do you run the mod on when batt pack is not in use... 12v? I am assuming this is a lm2596... Was your power cord/port liberated from useless electronics, or purchased for this purpose?

That PT I just use with the 5v battery pack all the rest of my PT's are VV and work off a 12V 5 amp power source or 12V lipo.

I suppose you could look at it that way, but a battery and capacitor are two different animals really. They both store electrical energy, but one does it using an electric field (the capacitor) and the other does it chemically (the battery). As a result, the energy density by volume is hugely lower for a capacitor. The big difference functionally is a capacitor doesn't wear out (for the most part) and its internal impedance is typically much lower. To do any real work with a capacitor requires one that is prohibitively large. When used for their intended application (conditioning and filtering), it only takes a small amount of work to do the job.

it actually IS possible to use a capacitor to power a mod, but the problem is you'd have to have something like this... Absolute CAP350R Digital Power 3.5 Farad Car Capacitor

That thing is about a foot long and 4" in diameter, so not really anything close to portable... Plus it's 12v.

If you're wondering how you would use a capacitor to power a mod, consider this... a Car Battery can run a car stereo and 500w amp with 4 speakers attached for about 2 hours before it's DEAD... but a 3.5F capacitor can run the same stereo with a 500w amp with 4 speakers AND a 1000w amp with a subwoofer attached, for the same amount of time. It's actually kinda amazing how much power a simple capacitor can hold, but perhaps the way a car audio system uses power is MUCH different than the way our PVs use power... Note, I haven't played with car audio for years, it's just something I remember seeing when I was big into BASS!

Compared to a CAR BATTERY, the CAPACITOR you referenced is cheaper, smaller and lighter than a car battery, but has more USEFUL energy. A dead car battery takes a long time to recharge. How long does it take to charge this capacitor? Sounds like we could just get rid of the car battery, and use a capacitor (like some of the trials bikes use).
