You made a great choice for starting - many experienced vapers love their 510's.

An atomizer is the coil that heats the juice to create vapor.
A cartridge is what holds the juice and delivers it to the atomizer.
They are 2 separate parts.

A cartomizer is a combination of the two, in a single unit.
On a cartomizer rig, there's the carto and the battery, and thats it.

Cartomizer (combined cart and internal atomizer) aka carto, holds 2x or more juice vs an atomizer cart, needs juice less often, provides a more consistent vaping experience for your favorite juices. however they have limited lives. They cannot be restuffed and are difficult to clean and dry to get additional life out of them. I only put juices I know I like in cartos, and I keep the carto damp for a week or sometimes two until the performance is too degraded and then I start a new carto.

Slim 510 can only use standard resistance cartomizers and atomizers, not the hotter LR (low resistance) ones (those need batteries 450mah or larger like fat battery models and mods.

Boge are the most popular cartomizers. I find mine last the longest if I use thin juices (20% or less VG) that leave little or no flavoring sediment to clog the carto (typically clear lighter juices)

And note - if you chose auto batteries, then you have to be extra careful to make sure a carto is not going to leak before putting it back on the battery because auto batteries can be damaged or killed by juice leaks. Manual 510's are totally sealed metal on the threaded end so they are safer from juice leaks (and you can also use a drip tip on the atomizer if you have a manual battery - a convenient way to test juices)

How I fill Vapor4Life KR8 cartos and Boge 510 cartos

Pop out the soft cap with an unbent paperclip in the mouth hole, very careful not to catch stuffing or the wire loop.
Shake and open the eliquid
Hold a bit of tissue on the threaded end hole, tilt the carto, and add 18 drops per ml of capacity into the stuffing (Boges and most KR8 cartos are about 1ml).
Wait 15 seconds or so then see how many more drops the carto stuffing will soak in easily.
Clean up the threaded end, tilt open end down into tissue, puff into threaded end to clear air channel (Boges and the KR8 cartos I use have a defined center air channel and I want to see light through that)
Sop up any loose juice above the stuffing
Cap and let it settle - I lay it on different sides for 15-20 minutes to make sure every bit of stuffing gets damp so I won't singe the carto. if you use thicker juice than me (I use 20% Vg or less) then you may need to wait much longer.

While vaping, if the vapor gets a bit light or a bit dry or the carto is getting hotter than normal, I take the carto off the battery and add eliquid. I sometimes use a plastic or delrin drip tip as a mouthpiece on Boge and KR8 cartos (not to drip into since the juice would head for the central air channel)

Im completely new to this stuff and just ordered a Joye 510 before ever looking at this site. Will this be a good starter? Also wondering what a cartomizer is and how it bennifits vaping?

I started with an inherited atomizer unit similar to the eJoy 510. I liked it since it produced a lot of vapor and flavor. The only big thing I did not like about it was that it leaked every once in a while. Since cartomizers do not leak (unless you oversaturate the stuffing), I decided to move to a cartomizer unit. Based on positive reviews from others, I bought the Colibri from epuffer which uses carts and have been very satisfied with the vapor it produces (some cart units are reported not to produce enough vapor for some people). I also bought the Colibri to not look like a snake charmer playing a small flute in the smoking area at work. Needless to say, I only use my atomizer unit once in a while to see if new juices are worthy to be cartomized. Hope this helps.

I love my 510 manuals with Boge cartomizers (standard resistance ie 2.8-3.2 ohms). Nice drag.

BTW a very nice PCC for Joye 510 is the one at NoSmokeVA.com - very roomy - holds 2 batteries (one can be charging) and 6 other items though you need to remove one condom from cartos to fit them in the slots. Search there for PCC and the $29.95 one is the PCC alone.

And I recommend a 510 charger cable for at work and a second one for at home so you can charge both batteries overnight. I also have a 3rd battery for it at home, the longer Joye 510 Mega xl battery (manual) which has 60-70% more charge. Late evening i make sure everything is set up to charge and take my mega xl 510 off the charger. I vape that until I go to bed and leave it out all night so it is ready to vape as soon as I get up. And no fighting with a cart and atomizer in the morning because I have a carto on it. When I leave for work, I leave the mega xl on the charger at home.

The benefits of cartomizers are no more carrying a bunch of juice bottles, can vape while driving without worrying about running out of juice too soon, and hassle free...no more leaking all over the battery or constantly topping off cartridges (no worrying about high priced atomizers either). Just fill a few up, cap them off with the provided condoms, toss in your pocket and go. Simple as that. Just don't vape it completely dry. When the flavor or vapor starts to diminish, refill with the same juice. They can also be cleaned if you want or toss them because they are cheap enough.
