Here are excerpts from some of the articles in this month's newsletter:

U.S. Court of Appeals amicus brief filed
September 23rd will see the oral arguments before the U.S Court of Appeals in Smoking Everywhere vs. FDA (now actually njoy vs. FDA, as Smoking Everywhere has removed itself from the suit.) CASAA will have a board member in attendance and will purchase a DVD of the proceedings to share with CASAA members.

CASAA has joined other e-cigarette and reduced-harm smokeless alternative proponents in filing an amicus brief, as amicus curiae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amicus_curiae). CASAA in New York
On September 23rd, the New York Senate will be holding a public hearing on New York State's Clean Indoor Air Act.

Numerous bills before the Senate Standing Committee on Health seek to expand the ban on smoking in regard to secondhand smoke as well as to regulate the access to and type of tobacco products available in the State (including e-cigarettes). The Senate did not conduct a public hearing prior to voting on the 2003 amendments and feels it is important to hear from all stakeholders. This hearing will consider bills before the Health Committee and examine how current smoking laws at the State and local levels have been implemented and enforced.

CASAA is in the process of securing an invitation to speak before the Senate and has allocated travel expense funds to send CASAA board member, Attorney Ron Ward, to speak on behalf of smokeless alternative users.

Info-graph handout and tri-fold brochure
CASAA has created a two-sided "info-graph" for CASAA members to distribute to their physicians and local medical facilities. The graph shows a stylized, human anatomy image and points out the vast differences between the impacts of e-cigarette vs. tobacco cigarette use on the body.

Regional Reps still needed
If you haven't already guessed by previous articles in this newsletter, CASAA needs more Regional Representatives! The Board of Directors cannot watch every municipality, nor attend every hearing. CASAA member participation is crucial to CASAA's future success as an advocacy group!

CASAA in Savannah, GA
CASAA Vice President Elaine Keller did outstanding work contacting the mayor of Savannah and securing 15 minutes to speak on the proposed Smoke-Free Air Act of 2010. CASAA does not have any Regional Representatives in the area at this time and felt that the city was large enough to warrant the travel expense for such an unprecedented time allotment.

Kristin, THANKS! It's been some time since I looked in on CASAA ~ number one because I haven't done my pennance to it or to the vapor testing ~ I will, later Sept. I know it's needed. I gotta get my oars in the water. Things a little slower here. But that's as usual for time of year.
Was thrilled to hear about Elaine's appointment,(hope everyone is doing ok), her trip to GA, and downloaded the brochures (beautiful!)
So glad to see new helpers aboard.
I was a little concerned to see Wi listed with indoor bans, I was under the impression from local taverns e-cigs were allowed, not part of the ban...unless something has changed. I will see if Wi people can help ed. me with this.
Also need to know, were CASSA members in attendance at Midwest Vape Fest ~ if so, pics please??
Thanks again for the info.
Um, still no reply from Surgeon General. I'm running out of breath waiting....:D

Great newsletter, Kristin! I went to CASAA and read the rest of it, you did a good job. I'm impressed with how much you are all doing. I just made a donation to help with what must be numerous expenses. I encourage everyone to do the same. This group of dedicated, hard working people is working for us, the least we can do is try to support their efforts.

Thanks for the update and congrats Elaine Keller (Vocalek)!!!

I love it when you post---if nothing else it reminds me I need to get my itsy bitsy donation in.
Sorry I'm lagging this time around--getting paranoid and mean to get a loadable credit card to do it with.
I know they are on the black list, but any chance of PayPal?

I'm sure CASAA members were there, but I don't know who. Maybe that would be a good thread to start!

Two issues in Wisconsin right now:

The City of Wauwatosa is thinking of including e-cigarettes in their smoking ban on city property and by city employees on duty. We sent a letter and informational packet to the city manager, asking him to consider actually encouraging e-cigarettes use, but haven't heard back.

The City of Appleton Health Dept is trying to include e-cigarettes in their smoking ban by calling the battery heating the atty "combustion." We are working on a letter to their city attorney, pointing out that is not standard use of the word and would never hold up in court. We'll also be educating and encouraging the health officials about why e-cigarettes should be allowed indoors, not discouraged.

Thanks, Up! I don't think people realize how important their donations are!!

We really need the money and member involvement to be effective!

Kristin, thanks, I didn't think it was written into the ban law, but now I have to go double check to see the language.
I guess that proves the addage to "verify", I get distracted by daily chores and sometimes take things for granted. Dumb!!
I don't know where you find the time!! Acolades to you all of you busy people.

It's not written there. Appleton is trying to sneak them in there by falsely asserting that because the battery "heats" that is "combustion." Combustion means to burn is usual use, so they are basically changing law without doing it leagally.

The Lieutenant Governor has been quoted as saying e-cigarettes are not covered under STATE law, but individual communites have their own smoking laws and definitions.

Congratulations Elaine. I really like the info graph.....and NOT to be negative but it needs to be edited....at the bottom where it lists "traditional cigarettes contain:...it lists Acetone Nitrosamines, Aluminum, Carbon Dioxide....and then repeats these three. Minor detail maybe but I think being totally accurate and maintaining high professional standards is important. Of course....just my opinion.
