Catastrophic Battery Failures

Hey everybody,
I was just reading a thread about a battery failure, admittedly the poster was using an unprotected Li-Ion battery. What is the likelihood of catastrophic failure when using manufactured e-cig batteries (with threads/switch/charging IC built in)? What about protected Li-Ion batteries in a mod? Anybody ever hear of that kind of thing happening? An explosion near my face would be a lot worse than a year's worth of tobacco crap in my lungs...

I'm pretty sure the battery failures you hear of are from stacking unprotected batteries in mods. I doubt you'll have an explosion if you follow those simple rules. As far as built in batteries blowing up, haven't heard any thing about it happening yet. Possible? Sure, anything is possible with electronics from China lol. But I think you'll be ok.

Does anybody know of a manufacturer that makes high performance (Li-Ion, Li-Polymer) protected batteries in Japan or stateside? I know that Chinese manufacturing isn't always that bad these days (typing this up on a Chinese iMac...) but still I'd trust something out of Japan near my face more than something out of China...

I doubt a 510 battery or the like has the rear end to break through it's metal casing. If it were to cook off, it would probably relieve pressure through the led end. You'll be good. Been using these things for over a year now without incident. I doubt you'll have much luck finding an ecig that isn't made in China. If you do let us know.

As far as i have heard no manufactured PV's have blown up in anyones face. They dont just explode right off the bat they will get really hot first so you should get a pretty good warning sign if it starts getting really hot might want to throw it somewhere safe. Protected li ion in mods are pretty much safe just as safe as laptop batteries , laptops use the same thing. Really i have only heard of a few cases where a mod went terminal and in all those cases it was because the user put in unprotected batteries. Also some mod makers put in extra safety measures to make them safer. Like vent holes in the bottom so in case it does go terminal the gases vent out the bottom away from the users face. Really the batteries vent rather then explode they dont go boom or pop the just vent hot gasses. But if the case it is in is sealed the case will go boom after the pressure builds up. IF it really concerns you there are Safe chemistry batteries out there that dont really do much when going terminal. The liMN chemistry is considered to be a relatively safe one also there is lifepo4 thats also considered safe.

Java_Az: Thanks for the reply, that makes things pretty clear.

Somebody should start a testing/post-mortem analysis lab (like UL for e-cigs)...I'd be into it; designers could submit their designs and get approval and advertise the hell out of the fact that their design passed the test. Thoughts?

or design a better atomizer coil and advertise the hell out of that

Stupid question while we're on the topic.
I just got my omega in and i'm loving the 3.7v but i'd really like to TEST and see if i like the 6v feeling.
Can i goto batteries plus and grab some NON RECHARGEABLE rcr 123 a's and toss them in for the night to see if i like the 6v experience? is that safe? i'm not going to recharge them or anything, i just want to see if i like the 6v before i go buy some re-chargable ones from online (because they don't sell rechargeable ones)

NOOOOOO lol. Wait for your protected batteries to show up! Stacking unprotected batteries will lead to disaster. Even if it does not hurt you, the stuff in the batteries is poisonous, and imo would probably make your PV unsafe for use even after cleaning. You may like 6v, but I was never a fan. The hit a 18650 battery gives is plenty for me. I never liked the way 6v cooked my juices. Made them all taste funny. You can get a high voltage atty, but then what's the point lol? Not trying to talk you out of it, give it a shot. Just DON'T stack those unprotected batteries.

Okay thanks.

And i'm totally digging my 3.7 with my lr 306 cisco atty's but i've gotta try it before i say "screw that" I hear 50/50 reviews saying "Makes the liquid taste funny" and "Holy crap this is the best vaping experience evarrrr" so i'll just order them from battery junction and wait patiently. i'm not in a hurry. i'm in vaping heaven right now lol

Dude, these lr 306's you can put 4 drops directly on the atty and no leaking OR liquid coming up in your mouth. that's frekkin awesome!!

The first time I hit an 18650 device I knew I was in the money lol. Imo, they are as good as it gets. I've got 4 rcr123's that have seen about a total of 1hour of use. To each their own I guess. I guess a variable volt device would be good for them. I love 5v, but not with a 901 atty. 801 at 5v are awesome.

ecigs can blowup in your face? hmm, i can see the tobacco companies running quite far with this. Whats all this modding about?

Not very far. Do you know how many tobacco related deaths per year come from burnt down houses? look it up. And it comes from irresponsible users who don't read directions decide to do their own thing getting the wrong batteries.
99.99999999999% of all modders have never had an issue. infact, all companies that sell modded PV's specifically say to only use 3.7 and to do 6v at your own risk and they strongly are against going higher then that.

So, if a tobacco company tries to use that as their strong fighting point they'd lose in a second.

No regular ecig has blown up that I know about. The problem comes from people using unprotected batteries in a mod(battery modification).Imagine the atomizer that you use on a regular ecig on a bigger battery. That's all it is. When you put two unprotected batteries on top of each other(stacking) they have been known to over heat and vent gas. All you gotta do is use protected ones.
