I have a xtar and a luc v4. I use both, but the xtar is beginning to show it's age by not wanting to charge multiple batteries above .25 amp. I'll replace it with another luc.

The problem with your Xtar is probably with the power supply.

Better to get it a new power supply instead of replacing it with an inferior product.

Use the included car adapter and see if you can't charge at higher currents.

This will tell you if it's the power supply at fault.

BTW, this limiting of current shows great integrity and safety of the product if indeed the power supply is failing. ;)

No, the problem is with the charger itself. I'm using it with a wall plug. And I don't consider the luc a inferior product. Sorry. The xtar is just old. Chargers wear out, as do batteries.

No, the problem is with the charger itself. I'm using it with a wall plug.

That means nothing.

Check it with another wall wart. Or the included car adapter.

Or waste your money if you want.

BUT!

As far as your battery is concerned, if it's not xtar, it IS inferior.

The soft ramp up and accurate CC/CV algorithm combined with more redundant safety features than any other brand charger makes this not debatable.

No other charger does more to make charging more gentle on your batteries to extend their lives just that hair longer.

Even chargers with advanced features can't compare.

Read the reviews.

I've read the reviews. I've owned multiple Chargers, including those made for rc usage etc. Xtar, while a good brand, is not the end all be all of Chargers. It's simply another brand. It works, when it works. Again, Chargers go bad. I've had this one for quite a while. I've had it checked. It's simply going bad. Does this make xtar a bad brand? No. Now, if your preferred brand is xtar, great. You buy nothing but them. Me, I am not brand specific. I buy what ever works, and the luc does work. It works just as well as the xtar does.
Now, since I don't mind using other brands, it's not a waste of my money to buy those brands. They do exactly what I want them to do, which is charge up multiple batteries for use in multiple mods, in a decent amount of time. And seeing as how I regularly charge upwards of 8 sets of batteries at once, using multiple 4 bay Chargers, I put them to good use.
Again, both the xtar and the luc are decent Chargers, neither of them are the best out there, but the end user will find they do the job they are bought for, and do it well.

What's the best out there in your opinion?
What's so difficult about trying the car adapter?.

Except you're talking to someone who knows better.

This guy... HP DPS 600PB How To Mod for charging power supply. - Electric Motors, ESCs, batteries, etc. @ URC Forums

(Yes, I'm 2genewb)

And happens to own those vaping chargers, too.

And knows that in this case upper limit on price is around $40.

Unlike hobby chargers that range from $20 to well over $1,000 easily.

1. He doesn't know.
2. He probably has the VC2/4 model that comes with a proprietary voltage power supply and no car adapter.

So he actually doesn't know it's his charger like he claims.

AND he has no way to check it since he can't just use one of his power supplies from his luc chargers like I can on my VP2 and VP4 chargers.

But the VC2/4 models do have a pretty display. Makes you feel like you're racing.

I noticed people suddenly liked buying xtar when they got that pretty LED speedometer display.

The VC4 is picky about it's power supply, the only thing I use that works is my Samsung 2 amp charger. Generic USB transformers can't really provide clean power at max capacity so I think the VC4 detects that and just throttle it's input.

*slow clap* big deal. I'm glad you think you know it all, and that apparently I don't know weigh enough to a) try another wall plug when it started degrading and b) take it to a electronics repair shop to have the output checked. Since you jump to conclusions there really is no need to say anything else except to get the f*** over yourself.

But did you try one with high enough amp output with a cord made to carry the load?

Otherwise it won't work.

Do general electronics repair shops still exist?

What would they charge?

I honestly don't know.

You still actually haven't said:

A. What you did try.
OR
B. What model the charger is.

So really what you've said is you know something without knowing how.

Which IS nothing.

Maybe you need help.
Maybe you don't.

But without details, you're just showing your feathers and dancing, hoping to win a mate.

ETA: I'm still willing to help you if you need it.

Otherwise it would be useful to gain information suggesting you don't.

Which you haven't provided.

A combative "NO!" isn't useful.
