I'm one of those R/C guys; have been for 38 years (model aircraft). The batteries used in R/C differ slightly from the batts used in e-cigs. The first difference is that we use (primarily) Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batts. LiPos are generally configured in square or rectangular packs, so they don't lend themselves well to most e-cig devices. I believe that e-cigs batts are Lithium Manganese, still in the lithium family, but slightly different chemistry, or material makeup. Regardless, the handling and employment of all lithium batts are very similar or the same. I'm most familiar with LiPos and in fact have more than $1K invested in charging systems and well over $2-$3K worth of batts. My largest batts are six cell, 5,000 mAh packs that have the ability to safely deliver over two thousand watts of power; yup, I could weld with these ;)

I consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to Lithium batts, however I'm a novice when compared to the folks who contribute to the Battery University website. If you ever want to know about Lithium based batts, I highly recommend that you have a look at their site. The information contained will answer all of your questions and eliminate speculation.

Cheers,

Peter

How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries - Battery University

What batteries would you consider the most idiotproofsafe lithium batteries?

 batt U again...

Hey... rc/flashlight/e-cig guy with an oscilloscope here (yeah, me) :D.

These mods (at least 2 of them) actually have li-po in them. ;)

Sweet. Sorry, didn't know that this forum had a "history" with Batt U :) Just trying to help.

All Lithium batts need to be treated with respect. In a nut shell:

1. Use the correct charger.
2. Do no over charge (most, if not all Lithium chargers prevent overcharging).
3. Do not deep discharge. Regulated mods and devices should protect against this.
4. Do not stress the batts by pulling out more energy at a higher rate than they were designed for (that's why its important to match the discharge capacity of a batt to the device). The device could try to pull out energy at a higher rate than the batt can handle. This causes heating, overheating and, ultimately, failure. LiPos really, really hate heat.
5. Never puncture a Lipo. If you suspect that the case integrity is breached, get rid of the batt. Just because you don't see smoke now, doesn't mean that it won't flare up while you not looking; LiPo fires burn very hot and very quickly.

BTW, I've been flying high powered electric R/C aircraft since 2004 and have never had a LiPo failure; degradation, yes, but never a catastrophic failure.

I'll take your answer to the question to be : "None"

I consider batt U more of a journey through which we need to hold the hands of the newly indoctrinated.

Not exactly a destination for which we should point and say go.

The information there is sometimes confusing, sometimes misleading and sometimes easily misconstrued.

Without a guide, one without prior knowledge can easily get turned around...
