once again !! the "u" means standardized,,,amperage is a constant,,ohm rating is a constant also

The "U" stands for a universal connector. Amperage can be 50mah and all the way up to 10amps, and thus not a part of the standard. Ohms are not a part of the USB standard.

A typical PC/Mac/Laptop USB port is 5v @ 500mah, but the amperage will be cut down depending on how many peripherals are connected via USB. External hard drives can be as high as 5amps, in the case of multi-drive cases. Printers, scanners, high capacity 3.5 inch hard drives, etc. will, in most cases, require 12v (minimum) and much higher amperages, with power being provided via an external source, such as a wall wart.

No. That is a separate power source, it is not using your computer's power source, but still...I would't do it...better to be safe...why risk it. If you can plug in that usb hub, then you have an outlet there near by. Stuff happens....if for some reason the PV charging plug decides to short out or overload it could feed back into all the circuits, and if that usb hub has a usb cable plugged into your computer.... : /

That USB hub will not be using the computer's USB power. The opposite is true with USB power cables (chargers), the only pins that will be wired up will be the power pins, 5v + and ground, data pins will either be terminated or not included.

*Edit* The USB hub will have power wired up, it is how the computer will detect that the device is plugged in. It will not, however, affect the computer by plugging in your passthrus to that hub since power is being provided externally.

sounds like you just described a usb hub,,not a port

better safe then sorry bah ha ha ha ha ,,,,

Unless your computer has a dedicated USB port for electronics charging (my Portege has one that is designed for charging stuff) you shouldn't use your computer to charge anything except your cell phone... Also, yes, MOST computer USB ports output 5v at 500mAh, so even your phone might not actually pull a good charge from your ports if you're actively using it. I had my mom's phone plugged into my computer earlier to test the phone for something, and the highest charge it was able to grab from the charging port was 136mAh because the thing was pulling so much just being powered on.

Almost any USB Wall Wart (wall plug that you plug a USB cord into) provides enough power to charge two devices at the same time at 500-1000mAh, and is much less likely to short out anything or blow any fuses, capacitors, etc...
