Yeah that's the thing. When searching I've only found ones $100+ and that Chinese clear one for $30 that I think I'll pass on.

But yeah I definitely want a mosfet one. Even though I don't know much about box mech mod tech, I know a lot of the good ones have a mosfet-protected switch. What other forms of protection can they have anyway? Is there short circuit protection?

A few months ago I picked up a CIGREEN ABS V2 BOX MOD for $55. Parallel 18650's. Unfortunately they're out of stock right now.

Solid, soldered copper conductor, all silver-plated contacts and mechanical switch with a generous coating of antioxidant grease where the beefy silver-plated strap meets the base so it won't arc. I don't cloud chase with it. I just like having a mech that can sub-ohm 3-4x longer than a single 18650 mech. I only use it around the house and leave mobile duty to the SMPL's.

Here's a close-up of the mechanical switch:

Cheapest just sounds so,,,cheap. Less expensive sounds much better. Not sure what experience level you have with vaping or how much you know about battery safety and ohms law. Hope you study up.

My opinion on purchasing mech mods is to get the best you can. I saved the money I would have spent on smoking cigarettes and cigars to buy some decent mech mods. I did find the one for me. Of course this was after spending a bunch on inferior stuff including regulated box and tube mods. Not counting all manner of atomizers. For me, a month without cigarettes was somewhere around $200 and this did not include the cash spent on cigars. This budget allows me to get quality gear and have extra cash for the booze and fun cookie jar..

I know enough about battery safety and mech mods that the lowest I ever build on my single 18650 mechs is 0.25 ohms with purple efest (LG he2 20A CDR I know) and Samsung 25Rs. I know that with a parallel dual 18650 box mod I'll get better battery life and a "boost" in amperage but NOT exactly double.
I plan on getting a sigelei 150 one day but if there's a smaller "less expensive" mech box mod I'd love to get that first.

So what is this "mechanical switch" on the cigreen box and why is it just as good as a mosfet switch?

As good as a mosfet? Silicon chips have limited life. When electron migration sets in, there is nothing you can do to reverse its impending doom. Heat is their enemy, and I'm sorry but they get freakin hot. How durable they are is debatable. What is not debatable is that a well designed mechanical can last forever.

I think I'm beginning to understand. The mechanical switch is much like the switches on mechanical tube mods.

So why do the dome switches with mosfet(s) appear to be the more popular choice in hammond style box mods?

Because designing a reliable mechanical switch isn't the easiest thing in the world and the switch makes or breaks the mod, it's pretty easy to wire in a 3034 mosfet with a 3A switch and be on your way but designing a true mechanical function switch that doesn't arc or get hot button issues takes a bit of work and ingenuity.

Yeah. So I'm thinking about getting my first parallel box mod. I know that the true cheapest one will probably be the farthest away from the safest but I'm just wondering what the range is for the cheapest mechanical box mods that a seasoned mech user would actually buy. Thanks in advance!

That's right; a physical hard switch where the smallest piece of metal that current has to squeeze though is the diameter of a 1/8 or 1/4" nail, not a soldered wire joint where the wire or contact joint is a millimetre thin somewhere.

So do any types of these mods have any sort of short circuit protection or are they just as dangerous in that area (or more) as tube mech mods?

A fully mech box does not have short circuit protection as there are no wires or electronics in it. An unregulated generally wouldn't either unless it is built in like the dovpo gx200 (I think that was the model number at least) which is a good buy if you can find one, got one for my friend a while back and it was a nice little unit
