So when I first got my DID clone, I was wrapping much better coils than my last few tries for some reason. No matter what I did it seemed like I could not get rid of the dreaded top coil hot spot. After really taking a long look at what was wrong, I realized that my top coils weren't touching the mesh properly. So what I did was bend the top of the coil into kind of a shallow "U" shape so that the coil would be perfectly laying on the mesh. Now I have no hot spots and probably one of the best coils I've wrapped so far. I can't really get a picture on my iPhone that shows what i'm talking about, but if you look down directly from the top instead of a straight O---O line from the wick to the screw, it should look more like O^O.
I've noticed when I use the nichrome that came with the DUD I have to use this trick more than when I use kanthal, as it tends not to stay close to the wick as well as kanthal does. I hope this makes sense and may help some people. Sorry if this trick is old hat for you guys, but just simply bending the top to make the coil "hug the wick" better has made a WORLD of difference in my setups. So give it a shot if you are getting top coil hot spots and you notice the top coil isn't snug (not tight obviously, just laying on it) against the wick!
