I am new to vaping and so far I love it because I have not smoked a real cigarette in a week and I am super excited about it. The one thing that has worried me about it is the chemicals in the juice. I thought it was all safe and good and then I saw something about diacytal or something like that. It can cause "popcorn" lung. Has anyone heard much about this and is it true?? It said it was often found in custard and dessert flavors. Those are the ones I like!! LOL

Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks!

Hi Summer and welcome!

I've been vaping for over 5 years and the diacetyl issue isn't new. There's some debate about whether or not we actually inhale enough for it to be harmful, whether or now we inhale as much as we would from a cigarette, etc. Personally, I choose to avoid liquids with diacetyl. You can buy liquid from vendors who have been lab tested as dialectyl free. Mountain Oak Vapors and The Vapor Bar are two that I know of. I've just tried the Forbidden Custard line from The Vapor Bar and I am pleased so far. My MOV order is coming.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is a harm reduction thing, not a complete removal of harm. We don't know the long term effects of vaping. We just know that it's probably better than smoking.

Thank you!! I would much rather buy the ones that have none to be safe. There is another chemical that starts with A that people said was the same thing just renamed basically. Are those free of that too? I might look at ordering some from there. I know its not 100% safe, nothing is, but that popcorn lung stuff sounded worse than smoking even. Thanks again for the response :)

If you're concerned about diketones (diacetyl, Acetoin, and/or Acetyl Propionyl), you can try to avoid any "custard, creamy, rich, bakery" type flavors, and stay with tobaccos/fruits.

You can also deal with vendors who specifically list on their website (or on each flavor page) whether diketones are used/possibly present (Ahlusion & Nicoticket I know do this).

You could DIY and only use ingredients/vendors who verify ingredients or you could try vaping unflavored. Many members here choose to vape with no flavoring and enjoy it.

What are Diacetyl, Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin?

thank you all - the list of vendors that do not use these ingredients is a huge help. I bought my stuff from a local vape shop which I really liked but I have no idea what their ingredients are and I do not really like that. I think I am going to order some from these vendors you all are telling me about. The place here I bought from is called Palm Beach Vapors but now that has freaked me out and I want something that shows me the ingredients.

Listen to the podcast linked below. It has a wealth of information. The concern goes beyond Suicide Bunny. The podcast is almost 2 hours long. Don't skip around because the information is needed in sequence. The first part is Dr.Gillman from the lab company that is very experienced in testing for these substances. The second part is Dr. Farsalinos who is doing a lot of the vaping liquid research. Keep a notepad handy. There are a few things, especially the numbers for what is believed to be the dangerous levels, that may wish to write down.

Summer, the two vendors I posted are also AP free according to the lab tests they have posted. Another option you have is to DIY, which is actually really easy. I did all DIY juice for quite a while, then got lazy and started buying pre-made a couple of years ago. You get to feel like a mad scientist and have complete control over what you put into your juice. The Flavor Apprentice is one flavor vendor who is pretty transparent with the ingredients in their flavorings that you could try for DIY.

Nicoticket is also a highly regarded juice vendor with many fans here at ECF. Here's their forum: Nicoticket Forum.

I have not yet tried Halo but Kris Kringles Curse & Belgian Cocoa on on my list to try. Halo Forum.

Stop on in any of these forums and members will be more than happy to help you.
