Choking on Patriot RDA, and IGO RDA rebuilds

A few weeks ago I purchased a Patriot clone. I brought it home, and cleaned it out with some dish-detergent, water, and a toothbrush. I have tried several different builds with 28g Kanthal, However I keep getting the same nasty result. Every hit I've taken has been lacking in vapor, but has made me cough and is extremely harsh.

At first I attributed this to poor cotton placement, and then the coils themselves. After several rebuild attempts and dripping 50/50 juice, I decided to go to my local vape shop to see what was wrong. My friends there saw nothing wrong with the build, and provided me with an exchange, at which time I also purchased an IGO just for fun.

I am still having the same problems, and so my problem must lie in my building abilities. Please shed some light on what I'm doing wrong!

It could be that or you just can not handle heat/vapor production. To help with the heat aspect you can open the holes a bit by drilling them out. Vapor production can be changed by the length of time you hold down the button. RDA usage and coil building is an art in of itself I have noticed.

Edit: as posted just above me, I forget that there is higher then 3 mg of nic sometimes  so that would be a good place to start.

yeah, it's either loose wire wraps or wick density through the coils, or a combination of both. Are you free wrapping or using a micro coil build?

Is this your first attempt on building?? Everything takes time and practice. I use micro coils or macro's built in the method of the micro coil. Always trying to optimize the rba I am building.

Everyone read the OP. His friends at a local vape shop verified that there is nothing wrong with his build, lack of vapor and choking.

He chokes even with the lack of vapor. That's usually an effect from a hotspot, but some people already said his build is fine.

We don't know what device is being used with that patriot clone or what nicotine grade and flavor his juice is.

most guys I've met at vape shops don't know chit. Personally, would never trust another persons build that I did not personally build, check and verified. It's like this, you have a coil, wick, air, and juice. There is only so much to look at. If the juice is vapeable, then it's the build, or quality of the gear. Pretty basic stuff. Ohms law, wicking potential, air supply, all part of the learning process.

Really need to know more details about the build to even begin to offer guidance. ohms, style, wick, .... just sounds like choking on burning wick. Nasty chit that......

Could be the juice, could be you're simply not used to it yet. I just switched to an rda myself and at first I couldn't handle it (granted the guy I bought it from had a couple ridiculous parallel coils in it, rocked my socks off) . Even after a few days using it with my own build I end up choking if I'm not careful how I take a draw (again, depends on the juice, I can't handle my citrus stuff in this, and all my juices are 4-6mg). I also had to learn how to wick again, it isn't quite the same as rebuilding something like a ProTank. I was putting too much cotton through the coil and kept getting a nasty burned cotton taste, no matter how much juice I put on it. I had to put up with that all day at work today. Now I'm running just enough through the coils so that when the cotton is dry, it barely makes contact with them. After you juice them up they expand and fill it.

IMO, you are not giving us enough information ZicZacCadillac. Pictures of the build would be huge here. Also, how much nic is in your juice?

I agree; we need more info.

What ohm resistance is your build?

Nicotine concentration? Most folks have to drop at least one level of nicotine when using RBA's.

Pictures would be great. We might be able to see faults in technique of the coil build or wick placement.

Were the air holes drilled out to be larger? This is generally required.

Are you using organic cotton? If not, was the cotton boiled?

A bit more info would be good, wire gauge, ohms, juice nic level,...
I used to be a mechanic and people would tell me " My car isnt working".... and from that, I would say, "what did you do to it?" their reply was usually "nothing"... my final answer would be, " then there is nothing wrong with it"...

To address some of the queries above:

1. I am using Space Jam, iVape.net, and locally brewed 50/50 Juices, all 12mg nic level.

2. I have been rebuilding on my Kayfun for a month or longer, and I've had a good consistent build each time.

3. I've tried a few different cotton configurations, each time ensuring that the cotton is snug, but loose enough to pull through without damaging the integrity of the cotton.

4. I've tasted burnt cotton/rubber grommet before, and this is not the effect I am getting with The Patriot.

5. I am using a Nemesis Clone, and a Vamo V5 (although only single coil builds are applicable with the Vamo due to the fact that Sub-Ohm builds don't work on it)

6. I am building my coils with 28g temco kanthal, 10 wraps each, around a 5/64ths drill bit.

I would also like to reiterate the fact that the vape I'm getting is low in vapor, but high in heat. It's almost like I'm vaping flavored water. I've tried to drench it in juice, and ive tried a drier (yet still damp) wick, but it almost always gives me this eye-watering, hot vape that makes me gag. Every now and then (usually the first vape off the build) I'll get a nice big billowing smooth vape.

I have tried my friend's RDA's and they have not experienced these problems.

It is most likely an air flow issue at this point.

I agree with this, poor airflow will give light vapor and an intense throat hit.

Make sure your air holes are directly in front of your coil, as others have suggested, you might even need to drill them out a bit.

From this coil calculator I estimate you're running around 0.75 ohms with dual coils. You need to have the coils lined up with the dual air holes and IMO the holes need to be at least 5/64 diameter. I would not go as big as 3/32 unless you want vapor more than flavor, or your build is actually lower in resistance than I estimated.

At 0.75 ohms and less you also need to be doing lung hits or IMO you're wasting some of the power you're putting in the atty.
