I tried posting this in the Veterans forum to get some good answers, and the thread dissapeared. it was originally at https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/threads/18650-choices.679758/

I am probably going to buy an ipv mini 2, and I want to get the best battery possible for the device. I would like to charge using the IPV mini 2's charging port, and was hoping to get one of the longer MAH batteries... there are so many choices and I haven't come across any definitive guides that are just like, this is the longest life, best output, safest choice.

what should I get?

I can't say they are the best choice. If you get real VTC5's then they are great and rare. The 2600 MAH with 30A is nice if you need 30A. People like the VTC5 because of the MAH and amp rating. The VTC4 is more available and is a good choice for 30A but has 2100 Mah. As another post said Samsung 25R is a damn good battery as is the LG HE2 and LG HE4. If you don't build below .3 ohms the Samsung and LG's will be more then perfect for you.

can you explain why the sony VCT5 is the best choice?

VTC5 = 2600 mAh and 30 amp continuous.

25R = 2500 mAh and 20 amp continuous.

Also, LG has a new battery out now that does 3000 mAh and 20 amp continuous. It's pretty new to market so I haven't seen any tests done on it yet.

More mAh generally means longer use time between charges.

More Amps means more power output. In the case of 30 vs 20 amp batteries, if you super-sub-ohm, you can build 0.1 ohm lower (0.2 ohm vs 0.3 ohm) if you use a 30 amp battery.

The authentic Sony VTC5 was so popular because it was the only battery which had the highest mAh (2600 mAh) and amp rating (30 amp). Sony decided to discontinue the VTC5, so the limited supply is what's left of surplus supply or are counterfeits. So, our choices are 20 amp with 2500 mAh batteries or 30 amps with 2100 mAh batteries.

Be aware, as of this writing, there are no 18650 batteries with more than 30 amps continuous. Any claims of 35 amps or more means the vendor is using the "pulse" discharge rating, which we don't pay any attention to because "continuous" is the standard spec in the battery market. Pulse ratings are dubious and should be ignored.

There's a relatively up-to-date list of recommended high drain IMR batteries with their specifications in the below blog. Beware that some China manufacturers over-rate their battery specs (ie Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised)

Battery Basics for Mods

1.0 ohm = 4.2 amp draw
0.9 ohm = 4.6 amp draw
0.8 ohm = 5.2 amp draw
0.7 ohms = 6 amp draw
0.6 ohms = 7 amp draw
0.5 ohms = 8.4 amp draw
0.4 ohms = 10.5 amp draw
0.3 ohms = 14.0 amp draw
0.2 ohms = 21.0 amp draw
0.1 ohms = 42.0 amp draw
0.0 ohms = dead short

I run Samsung 25R in my IPV Mini 2, works like a charm. The device won't fire below a .2 Ohm coil per the manual, though I have not tested this to see if it is true or not. I typically build around .6-.9 Ohms. Battery life is decent, and it's easy to swap out for a fresh battery. For the price of a VTC5, you could get 2 Samsungs so you'd have the battery in the device and a spare for emergencies.

Edit to add: Basic battery stuff, but just in case, lower resistance coils and higher wattage will drain the battery much faster, so keep that in mind when you're building your coils
