Yup, we had em here too.... hordes of them. I was helping a neighbor drag a cornfield, getting it ready for planting... when I brushed up against the outer limbs of the trees with the tractor, clouds of them flew off.

I normally love the sounds of cicidae, brings me back to childhood memories... but this year was toooooooo loud!!!!

They're bad here in Columbia. The last time they came out here, '94, the 17-year brood came out at the same time. The noise was deafening. I always think it's kind of neat before they come out. Then they get noisy and I wish they'd go away.

I'm trying to get my 2-year-old girl to play with the husks we find, primarily so she can scare her mother (my ex-wife; I'm evil), but she won't. Oh well.

The sounds aren't nearly as bad, for me, as the planned attacks. I swear that they're flying around my car door everytime I get to the gas station or the grocery store, just waiting to fly directly into my face or hair.

Same thing happens to me. I knocked one from my hair into my coffee mug.

I haven't even seen a single one, yet, here in St. Louis City.

I remember years and years ago (I guess 13 years ago? lol) when we were visiting my Grandfather at Osage Beach (Lake of the Ozarks) they were everywhere. My dad was excited, since apparently they make great fishing bait and they were free.

We've had HUGE ant problems this year, though. Had an exterminator out twice, gone through GALLONS of the store-bought bug spray, and every few days I can kick something over in the yard or out front and find a new nest. I've also had to bomb our shed 5 times, but they keep coming back.

After the second exterminator visit I haven't found many inside the house, but the yard, deck, patio, and flower bed is just horribly infested.

The ants are really bad this year. Super bad. This is the first year in forever they have actually come into the house. It's funny though, I asked my mom the other day if maybe it meant something when the ant population is inflated so much, is it a sign of something particular? Like last fall I have the biggest Pecan harvest I have had in years and I thought maybe it was because the winter was going to be so bad ( the furry creatures could stock up more) LOL
Now the cicada corpses are all over and I have noticed the ants are all over them...a connection? They could be relative to when cicadas come. Nature's / God's way of balancing things out?
This is all speculation but who knows? =)

We've had a surplus of ants as well. What I imagine happening is a Top Secret agreement made between the higher ups of each respective colony. The Big-Wig Cicadas and the Queen Ants made a deal, the Cicadas get their first choice on the prime Dirt Real-Estate in return, the Ants get to eat their corpses. A fine trade, Cicadas get the best of the best dirt for their young and the Ants get an additional boost of protein.
