juice leakage into PV internals is certainly not considered normal for a good quality device. Personally, I'd look for a better device. Some quick evaporating non-residue type electronics cleaner spray could be used on that auto switch if the spray can be used without the cleaner contacting the battery itself.

back in my 808 days, i recall a cleaning method that worked decently for me.

get a toothbrush and dip it in 91% Isopropyl alcohol. place it flat on a surface, bristles up. then take your stick batt held vertically with the LED facing up. then twist the batt's contact area against the toothbrush, careful not to get any alcohol down the tube of the batt. the bristles can go up the air hole of the batt a bit, but try to keep it from getting too wet. the alcohol will dry quickly, but personally id leave the batt resting on the contact point until its completely dry.
