cleaning contacts?

I always hear people talking about cleaning the contacts and threads. What do I use? Alcohol? Just soap and water?

i used cotton balls or cotton swabs and alcohol for the most part.....even though stuff looks pretty clean the cotton comes out black

Isopropyl alcohol 99% I use it on my mech mods, rollerblade bearings, ski edge tools... Etc. You can cut it with water if it's drying to fast on you.

I use Everclear on a q-tip. Don't know for sure if it is right but it seems to work for me. Someone please tell me if this is wrong. Thanks for posting. Good question.

I wouldn't use that on anything that's plated.
