Finish it off with a dab of vegetable oil for the polish. Seriously, vegetable oil works amazingly well. Of course, keep the vegetable oil off the threads and other contact points for the battery and your topper of choice.
Vegetable oil will degrade over time, just look at the threads on a 5 year old bottle of any type of vegetable oil. However mineral oil should work well, just a drop or two spread on the surface with a lint free cloth. I use those cheap $1 microfiber cloths they sell for eyeglasses.

Any brass/copper/aluminum polish should work. I use Flitz. I have it for my stainless guns but it works great on my copper and brass mods. It works for plastics and carbon fiber also. Use it on my guitars too and even minor scratches on my cars paint. Flitz rocks. I have brass polish specifically but it's runny and stinks bad. Flitz is a paste and a little dab on a cutip or paper towel works wonders. For softer materials like my guitars finish I use an old sock.
