I fully dis-assemble any new topper and wash all parts in dish soap and hot water. (Well, if it's a clearo, just hot water for the coil and wick, as it's not easy to get the soap taste out of the wick! :) ) I'd be reluctant to boil, as that might not be really good for seals, o-rings and non-ceramic insulators.

The aim is to remove any traces of manufacturing oils, and soap does that just fine.

I'll take a new RBA or mechanical mod completely apart and soak the parts in hot soapy water for about 10 minutes. I'll make sure to rinse everything off and I wipe it all down with paper towels. I then take a toothbrush and toothpaste to all threads and rinse them off. Finally, I put everything in an ultrasonic cleaner for two cycles and again wipe everything down with paper towels.

It may be overkill, but I really dislike the taste of machine oil.

If you use vodka or another type of alcohol to clean your gear, you should remove any rubber o-rings - it could ruin them.
