With my ego-c I try to stay away from really dark liquids (Cant see through or close to it) because I have found that not only will they dirty my atty literally 10x faster than a "cleaner" eliquid, but they also can cause the wick to stick to the coil as you have experienced. If you want to stick with the liquid that caused the problem, just clean it more often, don't let it get to that point bc all it takes is one time going too long not cleaning for it to be a problem. I have never tried to replaced the wick because fortunately I havent killed an atty yet, 3 months and going strong.
Also, like Kim said, find what works for you and use it. Personally I have never bothered soaking my attys in anything, alcohol, water, etc. just dry burning. People have cautioned me about dry burning often as if can reduce the life of your attys but as long as you don't just let the atty stay red hot for an extended period of time (2-3 sec for me) your atty will be as good as new. Even after months of use.
