Cleaning rebuildables?

Hi there,

I'm using a cyclone dripper with 32 gauge nichrome wire and silica wick at around 2 ohms. I like the setup but the problem is that the wire gets so covered in slag by the end of ONE DAY that I'm having to wrap a new coil every day... Sometimes I can scrape enough of the slag off to keep it going for another day but usually my attempts to clean it result in the wire breaking. It's not that expensive to rebuild, it's just a nuisance that the performance drops so quickly, especially when it starts failing while I'm not at home to rebuild it.

I've thought of simply using thicker wire, but the length would need to be ridiculous to get the resistance I want.

Are there any wire materials besides kanthal or nichrome that are safe to use and have a higher resistance/inch at larger gauges?

Otherwise, has anyone found an effective method for cleaning thinner wire setups without breaking them?

Try dry burning in between builds. Rinse it good then pat the wick as best you can to get rid of the excess, put it on your device and fire it without liquid for 5 seconds or so each time...you can go longer once you get use to the process.

Once the heat from the coil draws the moisture out of the wick the coil will start to burn all the crap off it, when that's done you'll see the coil start to glow evenly when fired and look new or almost new again. You should be able to do that several times before it needs to be rebuilt again.

oh, also that's only if you're using silica wick or wicking that can handle the high heat of a dry burn, don't try it with cotton or you'll scorch it in a hear beat.

Yes, no need to rebuild a coil every day, just dry burn the gunk off. With silica wicks the silica will turn white again and be like new, with cotton, just burn off the old wick and thread a new one. My juice gunks up my coils really fast as well and I have to dry burn it at least every three days, most times every other day. My coils last me about a month this way.

some silica will break down. stronger silica will be more resilient to dry burns. it all depends on how much gunk is on your coil.

also, you can indeed use thicker wire (if you like 2.0Ω, i suggest 30g) for a micro-coil. micros are awesome. theres a huge thread here, but you really only need some key pieces of info from it to get started. then you can advance from there if you want.

i'll summerize although i am far from the expertise exhibited in that thread.
-wrap a coil around a 1/16th drill bit all the wraps touching, about 8-12 turns oughta do it.
-torch the coil and squeeze it together with pliers (fyi i didnt do this on my first build and it turnd out fine)
-mount coil directly in front of your air hole, remove bit
-thread a piece of sterile cotton (CVS makes a great one) through the coil, let wick soak for a few minutes
- :vapor:
