Spray the towels with white vinegar and let them sit for a few hours then wash. That should do it.

The car is more difficult. Vinegar can help (I sprayed my seats). Then I kept a bottle in the car and sprayed it down (including headliner) each time I got in. I sprayed Febreeze in the vents in the heater/A/C unit. That helped too.

If you need to clean walls in your house, Scrubbing Bubbles is the BEST at getting the goo and smell off the walls. Just wipe it off with old bath towels.
How do you clean walls that don't have washable paint on them?

I used a small steam cleaner for my car and a shop vac.I used the steamer till the seats where wet and then sucked out the water with the shop vac .That got the smell out, only took a hour or so for my whole car.I also used some new car smell spray I got from auto parts store. My car doesn't look new with 2 kids, but it still smells new 2 weeks later.

For your laundry, try distilled white vinegar in both the wash and rinse cycles. Try hang drying your laundry outdoors in the sun if possible. The towels may be stiffer than you like them, but a few times of line drying should rid you of the smoke stench.

Marvin, what kind of steamer did you use on your walls?

The worst of the stink in my car was in the climate control. This is the perfect time of year to air it out though. Every time I went anywhere in my car I ran the vents full power with all the windows open, alternating between the recycled air and fresh air setting. Spray everything with febreeze real quick on each drive. It was pretty fresh after a week. I never used the ashtray or ever smoked without the window open at least a little so that makes it easier.

Another idea for the house would be getting your central heat and air ducts cleaned, and the condenser coil unit inside the air handler. Even if you used high quality filters for your unit your ductwork most likely is as yellow inside as the walls.

I spent the better part of last night dismantling and cleaning our bathroom exhaust fans. Holy cow were they nasty!

What about the car? What has anyone used to clean the smell out of them, besides normal cleaning products, has anyone tried the hand tool for a carpet cleaner on the fabrics? I ask because we will SOON be non-smokers and I KNOW my car reeks of smoke - that is NOT gonna play well in trying to keep from lighting up another analog :(

The trouble with cars is the old smoke just soakes into every thing fabric carpet even the heatercore and vents becomes coated so its almost imposible to get the smell out. One way is to fine someone with a ozone machine let it run inside for a few hours.

That must be some bad paint. All wall paint should be washable.I used my steamer on my walls and the yellow tar rolled down my wall.

Older painted walls particularly flat white paint will wash away pretty easy if you are using a rag to wash the walls. I hate to say it but the best situation in that case is to use the Dutch Boy Refresh paint. Here is a link for you ...... well the posting system would not let me post a link since I have only had 11 posts. Oh well. Anyway its a little expensive I have found. But worked very well.
