First of all, there is a thread in the REOS forum that shows the evolution of the REOS since Rob 1st began. Rob is meticulous, you won't receive anything less than a perfect, well made product unless you buy a blemished one, or a second hand one. He has spent considerable time improving his product, experimenting with paints, determining what is most durable. He does his best to make available to his customers what they are asking for, like the upcoming sub-ohm kit, milling an RBA to fit, etc. When you consider all that has been put into the product, $144 is extremely reasonable and the customer service superb. There are clones of other mods out there that are more expensive than a brand new REOS.1. I own a REO. I own other mods. Some of them clones.
2. It was more of a general statement towards patents, then specifically aimed at clones. Clones "innovate" on price point. People that want authentic will buy it regardless of price, people that don't want to break their wallets will buy whatever works. It's a huge market. Saving lives is a big thing in the ecig community. Should people who use clones not "have their lives saved", because they can't/won't pay $200 for a mod? When there could be a similar one available for $30? If mod makers really don't like clones, why don't they use Chinese manufactures to make " marked or somehow identified", worse quality, but cheaper mods for their own businesses? I guarantee the majority of clone buyers would rather buy their clone directly from the mod maker then take their chances on fasttech or ebay.
Patents hold back innovation because a design oversight can't be fixed and then produced by another designer. It can lead to the "If it ain't completely broke, don't fix it" mentality, that can stall progress. Or just simply because your not obligated to do anything with your patent, and a really great idea can be wasted.
I played competitive paintball a number of years ago, and there was a company called "Smart Parts". Anyways, this company decided to patent the electronic switch that was used in all paintball markers. They went after one of the smaller, but better, marker makers (AKALMP) for patent infringement. After a lengthy battle, AKALMP lost, and still does not make markers. The owner just services the ones that were already made. The ensuing PR about this basically started the collapse of "Smart parts". They were labeled "Nazis" by the paintball community, and were basically blacklisted to everyone in the know. The company is now defunct. This story is relevant because it shows that A) even if you win a patent battle, you may still lose. B) Something similar could happen to us. What if someone patented and enforced, for the sake of this argument, the 510 connection. You don't see how that could stall progress?
3.Again, was speaking towards patents in general. Not clones. Sorry for not being more clear.
I also get the ethical part of it, but when you consider that some mod makers exploit the supply and demand system that makes the world go round, I lose a bit of empathy. Considering most mods are just metal tubes with different engravings and switches, isn't everyone pretty much copying everyone else?
Not trying to start a war at all, but does anyone know how much it costs Rob to make a REO or Woodvil? Honestly curious to that. I get overhead and cost of equipment, curious as to actual cost and time to make. I also understand if he doesn't want to share that information.
Look, I'm definitely playing a bit of devils advocate, I understand the need to protect your wallet, but you guys were ready to burn him at the stake. Just trying to put things in perspective a bit.
It's late, sorry for the possibly incoherent rant.
Secondly, I owned three ProVari's, sold two of them to buy REOS. You might ask why, both make a durable quality product, ProVape has excellent customer service, but not the personal touch we get from Rob. There are several reasons, the Reo community is the friendliest, most helpful group I have found on all of ECF. We love our REOS, but I have not seen anyone be elitist, or condescending to someone who chooses to use another mod, or decide the REOS is not for them. The durability beats anything else I have used, the ease of use and not having to fiddle constantly is stellar. The only time I have seen anyone be snarky here is if they believe someone is profiting unreasonably, or in defense of Rob.
We are loyal to Rob, Rob is loyal to us. The quality of product and customer service we have is a rare commodity in such a disposable society.
I have no problem with you being the Devil's advocate, I will continue to be happy Reonaut.
