Looks to me like it might be working. There looks to be metal shims next to the spring.

I know Robert's around these parts daily, but has anyone alerted him? My cursory Facebook search shows this guy is not in America (probably), so this "cloner" likely doesn't see the possible repercussion of this type of thing (again, IANAL, so just conjecture). But, he has someone in stl (St. Louis?) helping him? That's shady weird. However, Robert should be made well aware of this, I think?

I wanna see what it looks like when it falls off his person while going 65mph down the highway on his motorcycle lol. I hate when people do stupid stuff like this.

I sure wouldn't let anyone fire that monstrosity in my house. Can you imagine trying to get melted resin out of white berber?

Well, it's on the internet, so it's never "deleted." Hopefully it's just some stupid "one-off" he made for himself, not something to be retailed. Ugh, does Robert have to start stamping the pat # into these things now? What the heck sort of "designer" with the 3D printer (uber pricey for that quality) just "prints" something up without considering intellectual property right implications? Surely, a "normal" person would do a quick due diligence as to what is ask of him. Shady people, indeed.

I think it looks like a word I can't post here, but my question is wouldn't it cost more to do this just to have some stupid copy?

The printer itself, yes. But the resin (ink) to make it, not so much. Find someone with the printer, pay for the resin, done. But, yeah, looks like the same quality as those plastic action figure toys from Mattel. He should have just stuck a battery, a 510 connector, and some wires in an Altoids tin like a good and proper home modder. Would be safer and better to use, for sure.

STL is the file type used for 3D printers. It would be foolish to try and chase this guy on patent infringement. You would spend way more money than you would ever hope to get back. That's probably all the research he needed to feel safe doing this. A 3D printer is not meant/capable of mass producing items. It's meant for prototyping, or just making cool and useful things. Like a new battery cover for your remote, a mod stand, sculptures and figures, or a mod. The time/cost/quality equation for mass production just isn't there.

I actually got my 5 posts so I could respond to this... been lurking here for a while. The only reason I felt the need was because I plan on doing something similar. Not a straight up rip off of a REO, but a 3D printed bottom fed dna 30 mod. Bogger boxes are the only ones available and the guy that makes them is sketchy at best. I should also mention I own a REO and a Woodvil and love them both, and if Rob ever decided to make a dna 30 mod, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Edit- I didn't know he was trying to sell them. I still don't think he would be able to keep up with orders/returns. Personally, I wouldn't want to attach myself to such a poor quality print, regardless of it being my idea or not.

I don't even understand why he would do it. Probably cost more than just buying a real REO.

He claimed it was made out of PLA and he was trying to sell them for $60 if I remember right.

What's PLA....and he was trying to SELL them? I'd be really mad if I paid $60 for THAT.

If it's patented, and he wishes to enforce his patent, then he should have been doing that all along. It's really difficult to enforce a patent unless you give people notice that the that patent exists.

Edit/PS: Do not mistake the above as me condoning someone copying Robert's design. I hate clones, whether they're legal or not.

I have a few friends that own 3D prototype printers as well as many machine shop owners who run big expensive Mazak CNC machines and I never even thought about doing this because it's disrespectful to Rob.

This guy is apparently not Robsessed like the rest of us. :)

It is not only disrespectful and unethical, it IS illegal, whether or not one chooses to pursue it. Patent stamp or not, isn't "ignorance of the law" an invalid defense? I can see the desire for home modders to make their own bottom feeders. It' done all the time. Additionally, we know turbocad has modded his own Reos and Woodvil to hold the DNA chips. That's awesome!

However, using someone else's creation as a 1:1 template is NOT ok, nor is it cool or awesome. The hobby is "modding" something you purchased or creating a new one from scratch, not stealing someone else's design.
