I'm glad you've got it up and going well again. On the updates... as if it isn't bad enough already... there are updates for the updates... Expect more chances for naps.
Install Windows fresh... about 45 minutes typical including drivers if needed.
Install Windows Updates... all day long and sometimes into the next day depending on internet connection and what service pack you started with.
I hear you. I'm a big fan of rescues! All of my pets were rescued either by myself or a shelter. Most of them had socialization issues too. Here's my current fur baby .... rescued her off of facebook! LOL!

I've always been a big dog person, but she totally hit it off with my son as soon as I brought her home, I knew she was a keeper! Lot's of work and retraining, but it was so worth it
Our KB dog is a rescue as well. Although the only socialization issue we had with him was getting him to understand that not every person/dog he meets wants to be social with him.
Poeia would FREAK!
If he's willing to wear a muzzle, you can go to the mall. Lots of people, lots of activity but he can't get nippy.
My sister's OCD dog likes his muzzle. She put a little peanut butter in the end for the first few months he wore it. The only problem was that the little, sane dog wanted to wear it too. (Oooh. Why do you stick his head in peanut butter and not mine?)
