I find the spice note is more apparent when the custard is young. As the custard ages, the spiciness mellows and softens to a gentle background note (at least to me). Let the custard steep at least 3, maybe 4 weeks, and try it. It may need to steep longer. I like the spicy edge so I like it on the young side, most others seem to prefer it aged.
Based on what you said, the custard may not be to your taste but the pudding should hit the spot. Someone might be willing to do a swap if you don't care for the custard or let your neighbor try it. I like them both. I also recommend the flan, it's yummy.
