Hey what's up everyone. I recently received a Pheonix Bully rba from gotvapes and after about 2 hours of vaping it just lost flavor then smelled like burning leaves on exhale. Room note also smelled like burning leaves. i was vaping on an eGo 650mah batt with Dark City Vapors "Mountain 55" (20pg/80vg). I took the cap off and looked at the coil and it had black residue all over it.

I noticed the vapor production was not at all inhibited but it just tasted horrible.

So I proceeded to heat some water until it was on the verge of boiling then cleaned the coil. I washed first then dry burned @4.2v and repeated the wash process. After I rinsed the coil I took some very small tweezers and scraped the coil then dry burned it again. Long story short I scraped and dry burned the coil 4 times and washed 5 times. Here is what I got.

Does anyone have any tips do a newbie on RBA's and how to prevent the coil boil? I sadly don't have any a-1 kanthal on hand but I got some silica wick. Also what guage should I purchase for 1.5-1.8 ohm coils? 28ga, 30ga, 32ga?

Thank you in advance,
-James

I appreciate the reply. The coils in it now are the stock coils. I will replace it as soon as I get some kanthal. I took the tweezers and speed th coil wraps apart a little bit. I just put some of Mr. E's Lemon Ice 50/50 in it and he taste is back but I am going to put it through its paces to see if I get any build up.

What size kanthal should I be looking for? Like what guage? If I can't find it locally I am going to order some by the end I the week

Make sure the coil does not come near the plastic sleeves on the posts. Those do melt and taste awful.

When you make your coil, push it up a bit so it's away from those sleeves and so it will receive adequate airflow around the coil.

If the coil sits too low in the bowl, the airflow just blows across the top of the coil and the juice just "cooks" underneath the coil.

Also make sure you don't overfill the atty, as you will have the coil sitting in a puddle of juice, simmering it. This will thicken the juice and probably change it's taste. I vape DIY VG based juice, and I noticed when I overfilled, it tasted like burning candlewax, LOL.

@P1NkY: I really appreciate the advice and tips. I took it to heart on my past 3 coils. I got some pics of different coils and how they performed. I have also moved my coils up once I installed them and that seemed to help the black on the bottom of the coils. Its weird how different based juices taste like these odd things when they are being "burnt" on the coils.

@DW: Looks like your coil is a little larger than the wick? Also I have not been able to fill up mine that much without it tasting burnt pretty quickly. Any advice? I have been using an eGo 650mah batt on all these coils but I also got an eGo Twist should I use something that has variable voltage?

Here is a 4 wrap coil out of 30ga but it didn't last long. Literally about 30-45min of vaping and it tasted really burnt even after a good rinse of hot water

I made up a 30ga 6 wrap coil earlier this morning and I figured I would go ahead and put it in. That way I could compare the 5 wrap to the 6 wrap both after .5ml of ECblends "banana nut bread". The 6 wrap so far has great flavor and with a pretty good hit still has good vapor. The only thing I did different is I turned the 6 wrap into what I would consider a dripping atty now cause it will hold about 3-4 drops before the wick looks like it may be flooding the coil. So far I really like the 6 wrap plus with the "drip" style it would be easy to rinse, dry, and switch flavors.

*I measured out .5ml in a syringe to make sure it is the same amount of juice for the 5 wrap and the 6 wrap*
