I am definitely no expert on this but I would think the premade
coils from FT (which I have been very happy with and dirt cheap $3 for 50) would be a option if you created a stand to hold it still. Just a block of heavy wood with a drilled hole for the dripper would probably hold it well enough. I use little igo-L's and once you wrap the kanthal around the post with the screw almost down, i think it would hold it while you tightened it. I honestly may try to do this myself to see if it can be done. Of course someone who is use to using 1 arm is much better than someone who is not. The only other suggestion I can think up in the wee hours of the morning when I should be asleep, is I get my igo-L's from
fasttech.com. They are like $7 a piece. Your friend could buy 5 or 6 of them and get you to build them so he has a spare if he needs it. I do my own but if my hubby offered to learn to do them, I know I would never do them again.
Good luck to your friend. I am sure ya'll will come up with something. That's what friends do.

Sorry I am not more help but I am sure some other wonderful ecf friend will come along and add more suggestions.
