coming from pipe smoking to vaping

I've smoked a pipe for many years and recently decided to try vaping. Finding the right flavor juice is quite a chore, since most of the tobacco flavors are based on American pipe tobaccos which tend to have things like cherry flavors added. I prefer to smoke the imported tobaccos since the laws elsewhere prohibit the levels of adulteration allowed in American brands.

I've found some sources that advertise their juice will be like the tobaccos I prefer, but haven't received the order yet.

I've been vaping some of the locally available juices touted as natural tobacco, but none are that close to what I prefer so far.

I'm wondering about the carrier oils and other trace chemicals that might be in e-juice. When I've vaped about the same amount of time I might smoke a bowl of regular tobacco, my mouth has an unpleasant feel and taste that I can't describe other than as "irritating". I haven't been inhaling, just filling my mouth with the vaporized gas and gently exhaling so I can savor the smell/taste.

When I smoke my regular tobacco pipe, I generally inhale a bit, not much, but only a little bit once in a while. However, when I inhale the vapour, unless it's just a very tiny puff, it bothers my lungs and often makes me cough.

Does anyone else have experiences like these or suggestions?

Thanks,

I smoked pipes a lot, and what I found was that it's impossible to duplicate the taste of burning tobacco, but it's easy to duplicate the taste of the added flavors to pipe tobaccos. The ones that worked best for me were the "hazelnut tobacco" flavors. They are normally called "555". 3 fives was a common hazelnut tobacco cigarette back in the day.

Welcome redwoodtwig. No liquid is going to taste or feel exactly like what you were smoking, because you're not smoking. Its a completely different animal. If you keep searching, i bet you can find something that comes close to the flavor you're looking for. There are A LOT of choices out there. The main thing is you're switching to something thats much less harmful than smoking. I'd say thats a pretty fair trade-off.

As for the coughing, i think most of us coughed on our first few inhales. It goes away very quickly. If it persists, maybe you just need a liquid with a lower nicotine level or a different pg/vg blend. Don't give up, you'll find a setup & a juice that works for you

I think my first go may have had a "bad" pg/vg ratio, though there's nothing on the label to say what it is, just that there is both pg and glycerin.

I've had much better luck with the pipe flavors from www.Naturally-Extracted-Tobacco.com, e-liquids for electronic cigarettes though still a ways from a combination that satisfies quite the same. As you say, vaping has a very different set of sensations from smoking. Requires a new mindset.

First of all Welcome ! And congratulations on the move to vaping. 1) I have the same problem with too high a PG ratio - I get a dry hacking cough. 2) For pipe flavors try Legend from HHV and check out the Ahlusion site that has some specific tobaccos such as latakia. Try and stay with the "Naturally Extracted Tobaccos" AKA "NETs" for the pipe flavor experience 3) Just about ALL juices need to have the toppers taken off for a couple of days, to evaporate any alcohol and what come refer to as a flowery flavor. Shake them every so often. After a couple days, try a drop or two. If its still not there, then put it away for another week or two. Smaller bottles steep or age faster than big bottles. Try sampler sizes first till you know what you like. Here's the links Welcome to Ahlusion and Heathers Heavenly Vapes, Top Quality Custom E-Liquids

Wow, that's an idea! But how does it feel on the throat?

Feels nice until you inhale the first time.
    If inhale:
First day TH is too strong and scratchy, need to let vapor slowly seep into throat while breathing in nose.
After week TH is pretty nice but not same quality as nic.
After a month TH starts to weaken but still nice for no inhale.
I don't inhale pepper anymore because could be more dangerous than nic; no test rat data.

    Hello All,

I am a pipe smoker switching to vaping. I smoked Dunhill tobaccos (Early Morning, London Mixture, Standard Mixture and 965 -- in which it is often said that there is not much nicotine...). I like very much the Halo Turkish blend, which doesn't exactly taste like pipe tobacco, but is still pretty good and does the job as far as the taste is concerned! I don't miss much the taste of pipe tobacco with that one. I am vaping some of it now with Ego-CC, but I am wondering how many mg of nicotine would be fitting for a pipe smoker. Are they any former pipe smokers here who could help? I am using 6mg now and it seems that I should go a bit higher (or perhaps much higher?). I hope this question will help the person who started this thread as well!

Also, it would be interesting to know whether you are vaping more than you were smoking with whichever amount of nicotine you are using. thank you.

i come from pipe smoking too, and am also new with e-cigs. i've found my habit of taking many tiny little sips pretty completely ingrained, and it's a way of smoking that doesn't seem to work too well with the vaping equipment i have, eGo clone batteries and various BCC bits. Not much flavor. Easy to get dry hits.

Is there equipment more suited to tiny little sips? Does one need to build it by making coils and wicks a different way in a rebuildable atty? i have a Taifun GS clone on order.

Welcome to ecf and to vaping..

Just in case you were not aware, there are tons of e pipes out there... Thought you might be interested

    Big-Ben-Odeon-Electronic-Pipe.jpg

That's a beautiful e-pipe, Steam! May I ask, is it yours? If so, where can I get one?

I've been re-boring a broken Savinelli not worth trying to repair, only to find the negative spring and button are going to be a very tight fit for a 18350 --tallwise. I think I'll have to place an extension on top to accomodate the firing button but my woodworking skills are Nada/Zero/Null. =(

Got me one of the newer wood ones from China (mechanic) but it's kinda "poor looking", like a drugstore Kaywoody of old. Works OK tho, and after dumping the ViviNova crap it came with and adding one of Dave Wolff's mouthpieces it looks all right.

I want a decent bowl, nevertheless.

I managed to make an extract of Samuel Gawith "Perfection" (an English/Balkan blend with some extra Latakia and a hint of Bk Cavendish added). Right out of the maceration process it tasted like the proverbial dog call-of-nature product but after steeping, going on three weeks now it has grown in taste. I've been using it sparingly trying to find the right PG/VG proportions for it, and I've also added some natural aromatic touches like sweet almond oil, mint extract and/or sweet rum liquor (even a few drops of Pernod). All I can say is that the base is good to vape and that in an e-pipe.

Now, if you're into aromatics, a second attempt with a really good Black Cavendish (some Cupojoes.com bulk) is waaay more easy to vape. It didn't need anything beyond some trial and error for the right PPG/VG ratio. People love it and my taste-buds too. =)

Now, other than consideration for the people who share the roof with you —I came into vaping willing to give the griping missus a break on the cantina reek about the house after I had my nightly (XXXL) pipe– what reason would you have to kick the pipe altogether? Cannot be health risk unless you do over 15 bowls a day! It's in the statistics.

I still enjoy one or two fine "English/Balkan" pipefuls a week but now in the sanctity of my office and at night when there's no one around.

    Hallo Verwandlung!

I stumbled into vaping trying to help a friend kick the cigarrete habit. Got an eGo 1100 battery and a pair of clearos and 1½ months after I've dived into it head first.

I've found that 6mg nic do the trick for me; I used to smoke three to four bowls of an English style blend (with the occasional bowl of Danish or Black Cavendish in the week) but I'm vaping way much more than I was smoking. If I go anywhere higher I get nic OD.

While I don't have the intention to drop pipe smoking altogether, the last pipe I smoked was more than a week ago, something that makes me truly sad as I really like that. It's just that vaping is so much more convenient and my wife stopped griping about the house reeking of cantina ashtrays the next day.

My favorite juice is also Halo Turkish but I like also Tribeca, DK Cigar and several NET's (Naturally Extracted Tobacco), among which I place top "London" from Want2Vape and "Best Damn Organic Tobacco" from Virginvapors. I'm also doing my own extracts out of Samuel Gawith Perfection, GLP Blackpoint, Stanwell Melange and a bulk Black Cavendish from Cup O Joes (cannot recall the name anymore as I placed the whole 500g in a mason jar two years ago. =) By the way, the Perfection extract improved terrifically over a couple of weeks of steeping and it's a great vape now!

However, I've also had a fair amount of success with tea extracts. The one I'm liking best is my Moroccan Mint but I have made several that came out very tasty and are really pleasant to the buds of a pipe smoker of nearly 50 years, since my college days.

Right now I'm trying a concoction made this weekend from orange peel, fresh peach crush, spearmint leaves and a sprinkling of dry coconut grind. Macerated in warm (70°C) PG for an hour, then strained and filtered and added in a 30% concentration to a base of 70/30 VG/PG then thinned with 20% diluted 40° Vodka 1:1 Absolut and distilled H2O. I've been vapng it for an hour and swear to heaven it's dizzing good!

While I was never a fan of aromatics in pipes, and actually hated anything that remotely tasted of PG, in vaping it's a whole different thing. I've come to the conclusion you cannot compare watermelons to Strudel. ;-) Both are delicious but you cannot make one taste like the other or even give the same eating experience. Pipes and fine tobacco are works of art and craft; vaping is high tech and alchemy. Both supplement each other for me.

    Tschüß!

    Jorge.

    Hello Jorge,

Thank you for your very nice reply. Believe it or not, I used to smoke 10 pipes a day! It is almost indecent, isn't? I should say though that they were not big bowls, but rather Dunhill size 3. It was too much anyway and I think that 12 mg will be just fine for me. 6 mg is just not enough. I got my juice delivered today and I should know for sure in a few days, when I expect to have stopped the pipe completely, at least for a few weeks.

By the way, one of the reason I decided to switch to vaping is the price of tobacco here in Québec, where I recently moved form NYC. A 9 US dollar thin is 60 CD dollars!!! Actually, Dunhill is not even available here anymore, but the price is what one has to pay for something “equivalent” if there is such thing for Dunhill tobaccos!

You say that you vape more than you smoked. It seems to be the case for most people. I wonder why. Ideally I would like to vape as much, or perhaps even less, not more than I was smoking, with the right amount of nicotine! I guess the possibility for most of us to vape indoor may explain the fact that people vape more than they smoked. Or is there some other reason which escapes me -- something in the juice?

For now, as I said, I only vape Halo Turkish, which I like very much, but I got a bottle of Capitain Jack form Halo today which I am eager to try. I didn't like much the Halo Tribeca, which was a bit too sweet for me. I will surely at some point try these that you recommend: DK Cigar and "London" from Want2Vape and "Best Damn Organic Tobacco" from Virginvapors. Perhaps one day I am going to make my own as well, but for now I intend to stick with what is available out there. There is already enough happening, as I am just starting vaping. If I ever start making my own juice, you will surely hear from me again!

    Vielen Dank!
