State park, private campground or private property?
The state park campground facilites range from decent to pretty good. The private campgrounds (that are left) range from abysmal to "why not just stay at a hotel, it's cheaper."
Just remember if it's back-country camping that the coyote population has become a royal nuisance in a lot of places, bears are only a problem in a couple of areas, and if you hear a wildcat/bobcat/lynx they only sound scary but they won't bother you...
We stayed outside of lake barkley a couple years ago, it was...........pleasant and relaxing I guess!!! There were a lot of prisons........

As long as you stay away from Lake Cumberland in the summer. It's like the Stones holding a free concert at Madison Square Gardens--overcrowded, hot as hades, and full of cops looking for trouble...

No, dude. Most of the locals that hang out there are hippies. They don't even shoot the tourists--just pull start pumping out fines to the loud and obnoxious ones

If you're doing state parks that's probably Greenbo, since I can't imagine the in-laws looking at Blue Licks Battlefield or Carter Caves as a vacation. Between the three, though I'd go with Carter Caves.
Then again, I like avoiding the sun and staying cool more than roasting on the water...
