I don't even start taxes till 2nd week in April. Self employment tax sucks big time.

That's what I thought, too -- but I didn't want to argue with a major babe..........
It does but when you see the disparity between the haves and have-nots in this country being at record levels you hope and pray that our representatives care about the country as a whole instead of the minuscule voices of the super-wealthy and corporations (WHO ARE NOT PEOPLE AND DESERVE NO INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS!!!
) but we are all old enough here to agree that my pollyanna view of others' even having a conscience is ludicrous........
Actually what's really unfair is the "self employment tax" it robs sole proprietors. God forbid big corporations (and political donors) like Wal Mart and the oil companies paid a fair share of tax. If I was incorporated I'd be paying 1/4 of what I pay now in self employment tax.
That's what kills us, A few years ago we made a whopping $16000 and owed $4000 in taxes. It sucks because if you don't make enough to buy stuff to take off your taxes you get raped.
It hasn't hurt me the last couple years, I actually show a loss for my business, its emasculating at best.......
The gob'ment just sent me a bill saying I didn't pay enough. Now I will probably have to gather up paperwork and go to interviews and such hassles.
I agree that purchase based taxing would be better than income based taxes. They would not be as regressive as you might think. Used items would not be taxed (houses, cars, furniture...). There could even be a "first $10,000 free" compromise, or tax free for food items.
It would cause items (think Walmart) to be taxed rather than services (mechanics, teachers, workers). So items made in the USA would be cheaper (no tax on labor), with the taxes on foriegn made goods causing them to be more expensive.
Another big advantage to retail based taxes, you know how much the gob'ment is taking. My guess is they would need to charge 22% to stay even. That could cause people to reassess how big government should be.
