I have found a heating element material other than nichrome wire. A lot easier to obtain too. During my browse
through my local walmart, I found some beading wire in the crafts section that looked worth a try. I burned the "insulation" off it, and unwound a single strand. As a test, I wrapped about 3 inches around some wicking material, and tried different power options. My try with a 12v 850mA wall wort was successful. I was able to hold the power on with the wire only reaching an orange glow. I repeated it several times, with no noticeable degradation in strength.
I now have to find a long distance wick that is heat resistant, and easily replaceable.
Feel free to offer suggestions.
