So I'm starting to get into diy eliquids and I'm looking at the dot1ml calculator here: E-liquid calculator | dot1ml

I'm confused about the amount I should put in the nicotine base section. I want to buy this base Nicotine Base (PG – 54mg) | Dr Vapor Electronic Cigarettes at 30ml to begin with.

Should I put in the calculator 54mg? or something else based on the amount of liquid in the base bottle (30ml).

Now that I am here, I see that the nicotine base is entirely pg. Should I increase the VG percentage overall, for example to 60/40 VG/PG, to get a good flavour, vapour and throat hit? I know that is all relative, but a good even mix of those three things is what I am after.

It's what I use, and was/is simple to figure out, for me anyway.

Hi, brilliant, so I just put in the 54mg, even though the amount of nicotine base I will be getting is 54mg in a 30ml bottle? I know it sounds silly, but on some calculators it says mg per ml (mg/ml), which is why I ask.

That is referring to the concentration of nicotine (% or as expressed a ratio of mg over ml mg/ml) and not the volume/amount of liquid you have. (1ml, 10ml, 500ml)
So in general, the calculators will ask for the concentration or percentage of nic, in this case you have 5.4% or 54mg/ml as base.
If you will be mixing with a goal of 50/50 or close (60/40-70/30) a 50/50 base makes calculations a bit easier.

Good luck and have fun

Just to be perfectly clear, you are correct to be confused, as most of these businesses are too lazy or ignorant to use proper units of measure.

The bottle and listing undoubtedly should read 54mg/ml, which is a long way off from 1.8mg/ml that the listing implies (54mg/30ml) by using the wrong units.

It's a stupid practice that probably will not change, unless the law mandates it.

You can generally assume that all e-liquid products and calculators mean 'mg/ml' when they state 'mg'.

I had a question concerning this also and I understand the answers given here regarding strengths. Let me know if you think this should go as a new post. My question is regarding using the eJuice Me Up Calculator. I want to mix a base for a 50/50 mix of juice at 38 mg/ml nic. The goal is to come out to about 32 to 34 mg when mixing flavors into that base. There won't be many flavors added as I'll be doing almost exclusively tobacco mixes. My nicotine is 100 mg/ml in a 100% VG base. So, to calculate the amounts for the base in the calculator I put 100 as the nicotine strength and 100% VG, 38 as the target nicotine strength and since I want to make 120 ml, I put that in the "Amount to Make" column and hit calculate. It gives me 45.6 ml of Nicotine base, 60 ml of PG and 14.4 of VG. First question, does that all seem correct?

Now, an example of a very simple mix using Flavor Apprentice Tobacco flavoring at 5%. It's 100% PG, so I leave that value in there. I leave the target value for mix at 50% PG 50% VG. Second question, when I go to mix flavors into that base, using the calculator, I put 38 mg as the nicotine strength, with 50% VG / 50% PG, correct?

OK, I do that and hit calculate and it gives me the values for the mix. I did notice that if I adjust the percentage of flavoring above 5%, as it's PG, I have to adjust my target percentages toward a higher PG percentage to get it to calculate. Mental note made for purchasing flavorings or making a maceration later on. ;) It would be nice to be able to put a target range in the target mix area so you don't have to go back and adjust it when the percentages change due to the addition of flavors.

I basically wanted to run that by you folks before I do my first run of DIY using the calculator. I plan on mixing the base first and then try a few small mixes. I did notice a cool thing using the print feature of the calculator using the Windows Office application, One Note, which I will put in a new post.

Yes, it looks correct. Here's how you can get a rough Idea if its right....
38mg is ROUGHLY 1/3 of 100mg % wise (100/3=33.33333)
So your nic should be CLOSE to 1 part to 2 parts pg/vg (whatever your choice is)
60+14.4= 74.4 divided by 2= 37.2
45.6 is slightly higher than 37.2
So Yes you plugged it in right.....

One tip though if your making a pre base make sure you make a higher nic base so itll give u room to mix down and hit your "target" nic strength.

Thanks. I always try and check my math with someone else as it was never a strong suit with me. I find the phrase "fuzzy math" funny when I hear it used to describe poor research or stats. Sometimes it's all a little fuzzy to me. :D Although, I aced micro and macro econ in college. Go figure.

Thanks cruze808. I played around with the calculator some this morning changing the values for the nicotine base because, like you mentioned, I was hitting limits in the target ratio due to the flavoring being PG. I was also hitting limits in the total flavor percentage because of the nicotine strength of the base. What I found was, if I mix up a 50% nicotine base at 40% PG / 60% VG. I'll be able to hit a target nicotine strength of up to 36 mg/ml at 50 PG / 50 VG with up to 20% PG based flavoring. Since I understand that most flavoring is PG based, I'm thinking that's what I need to mix up my nicotine base to. Sound correct?
