Hi,
In May of 2010 I purchased my first ecig and have purchased a couple of pencil styles since. Right now I am using the Joye 510 but think it is starting to fail.

Researching has brought me to the concussion that I want something bigger. I read about a Cisco automizer that says it works on the 510 but then states that it be used on a larger battery than the 510 comes with. Can anyone explain?

When they say 510 they're referring to the threading. Here's a link to a recent question in the "Ask the Vets" subforum that addresses the power requirements of low resistance attys: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...what-kind-batteries-can-used-lr-products.html

When you say bigger, I assume you mean you want more and warmer vapor. Low res or higher voltage will give you that. If you just want longer battery life, there are different solutions.

haven't tried it yet but the cisco has low resistance and hence makes a bigger demand on the battery. the slim batteries in the original 510 or cigarette looking batteries are not capable of handling it and it will wear them out.

This. There are two very prominent "510"s in the world of vaping and it can be easy to get them confused. One refers to the Joye 510 e-cigarette (or one of its many clones) which you have. The other refers to the threading standard, based off of the Joye 510. The 510 threading standard, which is the most popular, just means that all devices with this standard all are capable of using 510 atomizers and cartomizers. You will see devices all the way up huge mods taking multiple lithium-ion batteries that use this standard.

To use "LR" (low resistance) atomizers and cartomizers, it is strongly recommended that one only use more powerful batteries than the standard Joye 510 battery because they draw more power and allegedly can damage those batteries. The first place you can go where these LR attachments work well is up to the eGo or Riva, which is basically just a "fat battery" version of the Joye 510.

Here is a picture that shows the approximate size difference between an eGo and a 510 along with a few other slim models as well:

The Riva is exactly the same size as an eGo, for what it's worth. If you step up to a Riva/eGo and use LR atomizers, I think you will be very, very pleased with the strong, warm drags you get off of it.

Low Resistance (LR) atomizers draw a lot more power and run hotter. It's too much for a little 510 battery, not just for the charge life but also because the little switches and wire and stuff inside a standard 510 battery are not meant to handle so much current. The Ego not only has 3-4x the battery charge available, it also has beefier electronics built to deal with higher current draws.
