Hello, been lurking on theese boards for a while tought i`d join the discussion :)

Whats the concern with copper in atty`s ? i`m thinking about copper in contact with juice and heat (copper center post)

This time of year around here, we have street cooks cooking up batches of "suger coated almonds" in big copper pots, many distilleries want their alcohol to come in contact with copper under the destillation process.
Are the concerns based on facts or ?

Thanks

Hi and welcome!

Outside of making one's hands smell like dirty pennies, I don't think copper is a problem unless a person is sensitive to it. If I'm mistaken other members will correct my error.

Perhaps it's brass you are thinking of. There have been debates about whether or not brass is safe, since it may have traces of lead in it.

ETA: My apologies. There has been some discussions about copper toxicity, but I think brass is considered more of concern. Reportedly, this thread has the most in-depth information:

The thread Ocelot links to has good information, I'd also point you to:

Lead and copper rule - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and

Putting lead aside, which is all-around-terrible-for you... you need copper to live, but too much and bad stuff happens. It can leach into liquids, especially if heated. How much in an atty leach and get into you, and whether that amount is harmful -- noclue. On the plus side, bacteria can't grow on copper, so while your copper mod may look dirty it's probably the cleanest thing in your house.

Whenever I get the shinyitis, I go looking through new arrivals at fasttech, seems like every damn day theres a slew of new RDA's that I just have to get a closer look at. For me, if I see copper posts or any brass or copper parts inside the chamber or on the deck, I close that page and put it in the "not for me" category. I have nothing against gold plated posts like on the stilare rda, and nothing against pvd plating either even on the deck. But Brass and copper...nope...

Mind you, I don't know jack about whether or not they can leach lead or other compounds into the juice, I just prefer the peace of mind of knowing it's not there at all.

I have a Tugboat clone on the way with a copper center post inside the deck, wich i plan to sample flavours with.

What i`m seeing too, every listing of a rda with copper parts has a "fear mongering" thread attached to it. Was just wondering if there were anything concret about dangers of copper in atty`s.

Dont plan on letting it sit with juice inside, for longer periods of time. Gonna rinse it out after each session to be on the safe side

Thanks all :)
