So i just got my first rebuildable atomizer a few days ago. It's a KFL+. I bought Maxim organic cotton balls like I saw people raving about. I do think they work great but for the first like half hour after I wick or rewick my coil I get a kind of gross taste. Eventually it always seems to go away but for that first half hour its kind of gross. Is this normal? Is this why some people boil there cotton before using it? I just want to make sure something isn't wrong.

I've tried boiling and not boiling... I've used sterile and organic. You will always get a slight weird taste for a bit.
Different people boil cotton for different reasons and yes some of us do it to minimize the funky taste on fresh rebuilds.
I have seen people saying the same thing and their reasoning was that their cotton was whitened with peroxide. It would say if it was on the bag. Not personal experience, just something I remember reading.
I use first aid cotton that has a bit of hydrogen peroxide in it. I can taste exactly that. It goes away in maybe 20 drags. I don't boil the cotton. I figure the cotton with peroxide is a lot cleaner than it would be after I wash it in water.
I use the CVS organic cotton balls which are whitened with H2O2 and do not boil them, the taste disappears quickly.
that is normal. just don't inhale the first 20 vapes is what I do until the taste goes away. Doesn't take long..
all sterile cotton organic or regular is sterilized/whitened with hyrdrogen peroxide. H202 will not hurt you. Doctors use it to irritate the lining of the stomach if you need to induce vomitting. It is also applied directly to cuts as an antiseptic. It has long since evaporated from the cotton balls you are using.
I have three builds HCigar Kayfun 3.1, Russian 91% , and Trident v2 clone with Maxim cotton. I have no taste issues, I even let my wife take tokes and she notices flavor improvement with same e-juice used in Protank 2 vs Kayfun.
I haven't re-wick my Russian 91% for about 10 days now, (MtV Moo juice 60/40 ). It's around 1.5-1.6 ohm, on Nemmy clone....650 battery.
One of things, I make sure is I dry burn my coil red hot, pinch, repeat x2. Then I thread my cotton, prime it with juice, run few vapor tastes and repeat a little bit.

Same as what I use.... The taste is off for the first few pulls.... maybe up to 10 or so, but after that it is, to me anyway, so much better than the silica. When I first started vaping I stocked up on coils for my PT's and last night I took the 6 - 5 packs that I have and pulled the silica out and rewicked with cotton. Just can't bring myself to even vape off of the silica anymore.
I get a funky taste from new builds, using both cotton or silica. I attribute this to "breaking in the coil" I think its more the wire than the wicking materials. Also, I have begun to boil all new rba's and rda's, as I had a bad experience twice over with excess machine oil, which gives a very funky taste that doesn't go away.
