Built a new coil for my rda today and I use 100% organic cotton and for some reason it taste like mushrooms, not like burnt cotton, but like mushrooms. Am I rolling my wick too thick or too tight or something? I used this cotton before and haven't had this issue. Could it be my kanthal in that I should dry burn/torch my kanthal longer? I know it sounds odd but just imagine tasting it and trying to explain this. If you have experienced this I am sure you know how awkward it is.

That's funny bro..I use organic cotton in all my drippers without any bad taste issues, but I don't torch my kanthel either.. Also I put a little juice on my new cotton as I'm pulling it thru the coil making sure its primed good all around and inside the coil before firing it up for the first time...hope this helps!

I've always seen that trademark cotton ball taste described as "wet t-shirt", which kind of fits in here; both could be kinda grungy and earthy, right? :)

I didn't notice it myself until I switched to rayon, then accidentally used regular organic cotton balls once more. As far as diagnosing... I wish I could help! I know rayon gives off a taste when you've got too much density, so I'd imagine too much cotton is probably the culprit here. It's been a while though, that's mostly a guess. And letting you know you're not crazy.

Imo, the flavor comes from cotton being too tight, but hear me out... Its not a bad thing.imo, you can run cotton tight in a coil as long as you do tis important step. Once the cotton is through the coil and trimmed and placed, juice it up by placing the juice directly to(and only) the coil. Small drip at a time. Visually watch the juice get absorbed through the coil. Ya gotta do this repeatedly untill you see the cotton outside the coil become saturated. Once you seee that, then flood that wick and let absorb.

Imo cotton taste comes from juicing the cotton from the tail ends and that allows the cotton in coil(from being pinched) not to absorb its full potential of juice, resulting in the cotton taste. Went through this problem myself hundreds of times over my 3yr vaping career, this fixed it for me.

I know exactly what you mean, mushrooms! It's just that the cotton isn't wet enough, so try some of the tips others have posted for getting it good and soaked, or don't roll it so tight. I did it too, the first few times I changed the cotton out in my orchid coils, and I thought I was loosing my mind. Described it to the kid at the vape shop the same way, tastes like mushrooms…and he cracked up, because earlier in the week he'd let me try a juice flavor that I thought tasted like Fritos.

I should lay off the Mario Kart but I love throwing banana peels at people.

Thanks! I figured it was the cotton but I needed some reassurance I wasn't alone in this strange flavor. Was getting worried it came from Japan and my taste buds went nuclear, though it did taste like portabella and not ....itake. I saturated the piece of wick this time before even threading it and all is good. If anyone else out there reads this and is wondering why theirs taste like raw mushrooms.....there yah have it.

Glad you figured it out. I've been using Japanese cotton I got from Amazon: 200 sheets for $20. Just don't pack your cotton except the end to get it started (threading through the coil). You should beable to pull the cotton through the coil without it moving the coil, but not so loose it threads through with no friction. The Japanese cotton soaks up juice almost instantly.
Another wick to try is readyxwick. It lasts for ever and gives a very clean taste.
I wicked with regular cotton balls for a few months and there was always an off taste the first several vapes. Not the case with Japanese organic cotton or readyxwick.

thanks for the rayon mention. I have been trying to pin the funk down for a while. Even tried wicking coils while wearing gloves. Problem solved. I thought my taste buds were just irreparably whacked out.
