Alright, I have a Reo. I've been using Silica for my micro coils for a while. I decided to try cotton again, so I picked up some sterile cotton from my local Meijer. Thus far, I have tried several builds. Each one worked okay, but I had a weird taste. It was kind of cotton-ey. When I squonked a bunch, it may taste okay for a few drags and then back to weird cotton taste.

Is it my choice of cotton? Should I try a different brand? I'm pretty experienced with building coils, so I'm quite certain my build was okay. My question is more as to cotton or am I using too much or little?

I've been told that you need to get unbleached cotton. Most cotton sold has been bleached I'm told, and it gives your cotton wick a bad taste, so you need to shop around and find unbleached cotton.

I got some today, it's not bleached, but on the bag it says it's been whitened with hydrogen peroxide. This causes me to wonder why they bother whitening cotton which is already white. Hmmmm...

go grab yourself some Organic Cotton and bring a pot of water to a boil, then boil them 4X for about 5 mins. Use distilled water or it will get a funny taste from the stuff inside the tap water. make sure to change the water out after each boil or the whole thing would be pointless. after all that set them out to dry for about 48 hours also amke sure that they arent stacked when they are drying out or they will be a pain to pull apart when you are making a wick. best of luck man I use cotton in my sub-ohm set up and it just works awesome. no clue how it'll work on a bottom feeder.

Some pics would help but generally you want just enough cotton to fill the coil but not so much that it gives any resistance when pulling it through the coil.

Was your cotton in a bag or box? Plastic bags can get holes in them and let in unwanted odors from other products in the store.

It was sterile cotton that was in a sealed bag inside a box. Meijer sterile cotton. I bought it because i had heard that sterile cotton was good without much prep. It was vacuum sealed.

On a fresh cotton build I always get a slight cottony taste, but it goes away quite quickly. How much juice have your vaped through the build so far? Usually within a few ml the taste is gone, to my senses at least. At first I thought I just got used to the taste, but after re-wicking and forgetting all about the cotton taste, it always reminds me that it's there when fresh.

I use the proper rolled cotton although I've never boiled it.

I use CVS 100% Sterile Cotton.
CVS Rolled Cotton - CVS pharmacy

+ 1 on both of the above. I use the same cotton and usually the first 5-10 hits will have a cottony / metallic taste but after that it's game on. I don't boil my CVS sterile rolled cotton.

It sounds like you might have too much cotton in there. The stuff swells pretty well, so you really want to roll it so it's just touching your coils. Don't roll it too tightly though, or it'll swell too much. The other thing I've found with mine is that after about 2-3 toots, I have to squonk again, but I take longer hits. The cotton taste goes away after a bit, but I know people who can taste it no matter what. Good luck!

The biggest thing I have found with cotton isn't whether it's boiled or not. It's how long you let it sit, in order to fully saturate, before vaping. The longer you can let it sit, after priming the cotton with juice, the better it will taste. In a Kayfun, I won't vape it for at least 1/2 hour after installing a new wick. I take a couple primer drags, without hitting the power button, and then let it sit.
