If you really want to have a good look at the differences between organic cotton, rayon and japanese cotton, this 47 minute video will help!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcZjaG9RPZ4

I started off using cotton, couldn't find organic in the shops so just went for 100% pure cotton and didn't boil it. People who boil their cotton use distilled water. I would not use regular tap water to boil cotton that I was going to vape off as regular unfiltered water contains metals and minerals, fine to drink but I'd rather not be heating and inhaling these things. As someone else mentioned, I just pick out the husks from the cotton and go for it. I'd seen someone else online raise the point that things like bleach (if you're unlucky and find your cotton has been bleached, don't think mine has) will evaporate, especially under direct sunlight so I just leave the cotton bag open as well.

However I use rayon now like a few people here. Bought mine off ebay for a few quid. Wicks better, tastes cleaner, don't have to worry about the whole organic/boiling thing with cotton.

Just try some 100% cotton and if you like vaping RDAs or RTAs then find some rayon on ebay or elsewhere I reckon.

HI All,

To throw in my 2 pence worth, I have been vaping for a few months now and straight away our local vape shop got me into re-building coils with cotton. I have been using orgainc cotton balls and it has worked well for me once I mastered how much cotton I need for the coils.

I have just updated from my ego batteries to an Eleaf iStick and it is a great battery btw, but I also ordered a few pads of KGD cotton to try. The other night I tried it in a new coil build and by god it was easy to wick and no issues with it. As for taste I can't tell much difference to standard cotton balls but that might be me. What I will say is though it is so easy to wick a coil with it, but getting it is a nightmare (at a reasonable price) so I have been googling around and found another type of Japanese cotton called Muji. It looks identical to KGD but you actually get more as the pads split in to 4 layers.

Here's a link to a youtube vid about it

and I have just ordered some from here today

MUJI Online - MUJI Shopping

£2.50 for 60 pads (that splits into 4 so 240 sheets) and £2.95 shipping to the UK. I think I will have enough cotton now to last a life time.

I've just the other day attempted a rebuild of a coil using cotton wool. Being based in Saudi, means no access to organic cotton wool- which was the recommended wicking material at the time. A friend was travelling back to Blighty and got him to bring me some back. Boots is the easiest / best high street store , and got some organic cotton wool pads, just pick out the innards and Bob's your uncle.

As others have said, I think some experimentation is required with the amount of CW to use, too much and it won't wick, too little and the atty will probably flood. Looking at the date of the last post, being a few months ago, I guess you're all sorted now but would be good to hear of your experience with your rebuilds. Cheers

For an update on the Muji pads I have been using for a few weeks, They are very good, and very easy to wick your coils with. The taste I would say is on par with KGD and both of these are only slightly better than normal cotton wall balls (natural unbleached of course).

What I have been doing recently since buying an eLeaf iStick is building vertical coils as these seem to run better on the iStick and wicking with the Muji is a doddle, just wrap it around the coils before inserting in the head. Getting great flavour and vapour at the moment.

I starting using the cotton pads, then found some organic cotton, then got some organic natural (tan) cotton and settled on ReadyXwick.

The cotton was good, but i found myself having to change it too often.

The readyXwick is amazing... dirty and nasty tasting? just torch it and put it back in.. good as new.

see?

A few months ago I wanted to get into cotton wicking. I got some cellucotton from clould9vaping. I emailed them and got lots of info before purchasing. Ive used the a few times and found them tip top.

I heard a lot of noise about japanese organic stuff and found a shop on eBay based in Tokyo that sells genuine kgd cotton pads. I paid just under £15 including shipping for 80 pads. I did a quick hm customs search and anything over £15 and you have to pay duty.

I found kgd pretty decent, easy to use and 'slightly' better than cellucotton. I say slightly as im no expert and might be using to sparingly or over stuffing my coils. Still experimenting on kayfuns and a dripper that's only a few hours old.

Hope this helps:)

Looking at it logically the mesh and ceramic wicks should produce the purest flavours

seeing as the temperatures produced in a wetted coil are nowhere near enough to

produce a chemical reaction compared the the temperatures involved in their production

I think it wont be too long until somebody comes up with a mineral wick, similar to an airstone

in a fish tank, that is gravity fed rather that being dependant on capillarity
