1) how do I know I have enough cotton in the coil
This is best learned from experience. Too much cotton can strangulate the cotton fibers and decrease the flow of e-liquid, thus leading to a dry hit. Too little cotton can result in the same thing. You should be able to gently pull on either end of the wick without any drag resistance of the coil.
Cotton and rayon (cellucotton) are both used as wick, but perform differently. When wet, cotton expands while rayon shrinks. Therefore, you can (and should) use more rayon than you would cotton if that is what you choose.
Watching a YouTube video of someone wicking an atomizer with a similar build deck and using similar coils to yours can give you a good starting place to aim for.
2) how often do I change the cotton /will it taste burnt when it needs changing
After 3 - 4 days, you'll notice that the cotton doesn't appear to be wicking as well as when fresh. Perhaps it will taste burnt or the flavor will be muted. You'll also note that the cotton isn't taking on or absorbing the e-liquid as well as before.
I change my wick every 3 - 4 days...this is what works best for me, but I know folks who change it on a daily basis.
I dry burn clean my coils with each wick change. This can allow you to use the same coil for 3 - 4 months or longer. On the other hand, I know folks who build a new coil on a daily basis.
