Worried because after going from 2-2.5 PAD down to 1-2 cigs a day (vaping rest of time) I have yet to cough up anything remotely close to what other describe as "tar" or nasty phlegm coming from the lungs as they clear out.
I'm wondering one of two things here:
1) Did I do so much damage to my lungs that they will never recover and get rid of the tar build up? (30+yrs of smoking, not always 2-2.5 PAD but never less than a pack a day)

2) Is it because I am still not over my 1-2 a day habit? Is the fact that I am still having the occasional cigarette stopping my lungs from completely recovering? (I know, maybe that is a stupid question)

I am DEFINITELY breathing better, not hacking up a lung in the mornings and not wheezing or just busting out in a cough sitting still, for no apparent reason. I feel MUCH better overall... I guess I'm just concerned because everyone else seems to have gone through that phase of getting rid of the tar in their bodies, yet, I have not. I've been vaping for about 3 weeks now.

Any thoughts?

Dr's Say that even one real cigarette a day will make your lungs sick. At least mine did. So I just went with a mod that delivers me more vapor and quit completely. been about 6 months now and feel great and the cough is almost gone and the taste is back and no wheezing at all
I was a 4 PAD smoker for over 45 years and now I feel great (for my age lol)
Hope you stop that 1 or 2 a day thingie. for your own good. That is just my > :2c:

Everyone is different. I've yet to hack up anything disturbing, and I smoked 30+ years, 3 packs of Kools per day for the last half of that. What happened with me, was that my dry, non-productive smoker's cough turned into a productive, "healthy" cough. After a few weeks, I began coughing less and less. Now I hardly cough at all, compared with before. It's been over 8 months since I smoked a cigarette.

I never went through the coughing-stuff-up phase after quitting cigarettes either. My doctor said that's not necessarily a bad thing. He said I probably just didn't have a build-up that needed clearing out. I smoked 1-2 packs a day for 20 years, but they were ultra lights and I really didn't inhale deeply. Maybe that makes a difference, I don't know. I feel fine, though :)

I haven't really coughed up anything yukky either and I smoked at least a PAD for 25 years - not all smokers have bad lungs, or have coughs, and not all smokers die from lung cancer. My chest xrays have always been clear although I did have a cough it was from post-nasal drip (ewww lol) which was smoking related and I don't have a cough (or the post nasal thing) any more since I started vaping. I also don't get infected sinsues any more now but alas I still get phlegm (can't have it all, right? lol)
I was wondering about coughing up 'stuff' but after 4 months off cigs and still not 'yukky cough-up' I figured there was just nothing down there to get rid of. Still nothing at 8 months so I guess some of us are just lucky we didn't fill our airways with tar.

I am quite surprised I haven't coughed anything up yet, considering the last 2yrs or so, I was hacking up a lung each morning for at least 15-20mins before it subsided. It makes me wonder if my lungs weren't that bad, or if I have done so much damage to them, I won't cough anything up? That's the question which is a little worrisome to me.

I had very little come up. I learned years ago, that if I forcefully cleared my lungs by a deep compressed exhale, I wouldn't have a smokers cough n the morning. Before I learned this technique, I would cough so hard in the mornings that I thought I was going to pass out. I literally couldn't catch a breath.

Now with the e-cig, i will sometimes have a slight wheezing when I lay down. So I still use the breath out all the air, Compress my lungs by not letting any air out, but still forcing the lungs to expel like I was breathing out. Then let the last bit of air out. It does away with any wheezing at all.

I was experiencing COPD for the last 10 years or so. My lungs sounded like a sound track from the exorcist. It was so bad that I couldn't go to sleep some nights due to all the demonic noises.

E-Cigs have given me a new leaf on life. Now if we can just deep the dam Fed's out of it, we will all be a lot better off!
