Im assuming most of you who have been actively on this forum for a long time here these questions a lot but im new to this e-smoking and very interested in the switch. I was looking for some advice and tips on what type of e-cig to look into or get, also differ between what brands are good, and which are bad. Ive noticed that the drip method is more advanced and popular so i was wondering based on dripping what brand would be best for durabaility, standbye time, etc. Do certain smoking shops or stores sell the juice for dripping or is mainly resupplying from internet store? Ive also noticed that the Blu E-cig's seem to be getting a lot of hype and popularity and i was wondering if it is worth getting one and if their is possibly a different brand with the same blue light and cool design thats newer or just overall better? if anyone would be kind enough to give me some answers and some tips that would be well appreciated thanks :toast:.

Hi and welcome to ecf......I started on the Blu, and while it helped get me started, it was quite expensive as opposed to what else is out there. Favorites here include the Joy 510 and eGos. Also KR808D. Depends on what your specifc requirements are. Two good hardware companies are liberty-flights.com and vapor4life.com . Take a look and see if anything strikes you and come back and ask questions.
Good luck
:)

I've only been vaping a couple of months, but from the excellent suggestions offered to me on this forum, I chose a Riva 510 Lite Bundle from Liberty Flights. They have a 20% discount. The Bundle contained everything to get you started except the juice and the filler for the cartridges. For me, it is a good model to get started with. Yesterday I ordered a couple of drip tips to start experimenting. I am able to do that with my Riva. I am sure others will have excellent suggestions.

Hello and welcome to ECF :)

There are all kinds of PV (Personal Vaporizer) systems to choose from, and much of wisely choosing your first kit depends on your current smoking habits, and an aproximate idea of your upfront, and long term budget for vaping.

What works fine for a 10 cigarette ultra light menthol a day smoker probably wouldn't cut it for a 2 pack a day full flavor smoker. Then there are those who prefer the draw of pipes or cigars.

Another thing to consider is how much time and effort do you want to put into preparing your kit and maintaining it.

For example, if you are a very busy person who just wants a simple system that is plug and play...no messing with juice, cleaning parts, etc....then consider a system that uses prefilled cartomizers. Lite smokers are often happy with mini kits like the KR808D-1, while someone needing a longer and more powerful vape might lean towards the cartridge based 'e-pipe'. Which ever device you choose for this route, the important thing is to find a place that stocks cartridges you enjoy, at reasonable prices.
This route is not as flexible and costs slightly more (unless you are a very light smoker, then it might actually be the most cost effective), but it does save TIME, and is still much less costly than smoking for most people.

If you love to tinker with things, would like to have access to an endless array of e-liquids/flavors, and explore many types of vaping hardware, then consider starting in the middle with something like an eGo USB passthrough with several different sample systems to try until you discover your favorite. With that first fat battery/passthrough, you save expenses on chargers and such and can instead try various vaping systems and juices. From there you can spend some time finding what works best for you in terms of atomizers, cartidges, and other accessaries. :)

Let us know a little more about your daily smoking routines and preferances and perhaps members will offer more detailed recommendations.

My ideal starter kit would consist of:

1. A singe eGo or Riva 510 USB Passthrough battery with usb cord and cone.
2. A drip tip or two.
3. Regular 510 atomizer.
4. Low resistance 510 atomizer.
5. A package of regular, smart, or lucid type standard cartidges with filler.
6. A package of CE2 type Cartomizers (Fluxomizers, Clearomizers, etc.) (any under 2.8ohms in either size, clear or metal should be fine for sampling).
7. A package of regular polly fill cartomizers (Boge, Smoketech, SLB, all good brands).
8. Possibly a Turbine or eGo T atomizer and tanks.
9. A few bottles of e-liquid. I'd recommend at least 60ml at various strengths and flavors on the first purchase...as you might go through quite a bit just exploring the systems.

It's not imperative to get all of that stuff at once....you could try different platforms as you go. For me however, the ideal 'starter's explorer kit' would be one of each. After trying them all, I would know better what to stock up on in the future :)

It is quite possible that you can find or put yourself together a kit with ALL of that for less than $80.

Out of that pile of stuff, you can try samples of the most common and popular vaping platforms that work well with standard market batteries.

Well usually if im busy working or occupied with something im not smoking at all can go a while without a cigarette. Its a different story and always 20x harder it seems to do the same when im out with friends, out in general i usually tend to smoke more than if im at home or at work.. I tend to smoke 5-10x the cigarettes i do when im drinking thats normal though lol.. But overall i think i would be interested in spending the time with the dripping method. I was hoping to find or discover some newer type or brand thats known as the top of the line, durable, and over has the best options king to its competitors as a starter kit to invest in but idk if such thing exists yet or is even worth it in long run..:?:

You've asked for a lot of information. I might as well say that I really got frustrated with the battery life on the only cigarette sized kit that I ever had. So, keep that in mind as you read this.

I think starting out, the first thing you need to do is find a juice and nic level that work for you and learn to use the device. So, I'm not going to recommend anything too exotic. I'll also say that I'm allergic to automatic batteries. I recommend that whatever you get, get something with a button to activate the batter instead. Also keep in mind that these batteries can't be recharged forever. So, you will have to replace them every few months.

Cigarette size options

The one thing all of these have in common is short battery life. It's maybe 3 hours, if you're lucky. So, you either have to be around a plug all the time, carry a bunch of batteries, or get a PCC. A PCC (Personal Charging Case) is a case like a cigarette case that you charge and it can charge your spent PV batteries. In this category, the only options I would recommend are the KR808D1 and the Joye 510.

The KR808D1s are generally considered simpler to use mainly because there aren't a lot of options for them and they come with pre-filled cartomizers (cartos). You just screw one on and vape. However, you really need to get some juice and refill them to save money. I should mention one particular 808 that has a pretty devoted folowing. That's the Bloog Max Fusion which is a little bigger around than most and has better battery electronics. It's so popular availability can be an issue. If you go with an 808, you might want to get a 901 atomizer and a drip tip to sample juices before filling a carto.

The usual Joye 510 comes with an atomizer and cartridges (carts). I'm not a big fan of carts. However, you can get cartos for these too and some kits come that way. So, these can be the same as the 808s to use. It seems like the industry has chosen the 510 thread for just about everything new. So, there are a bewildering array of options with this thread type. Some of these options like LR (Low Resistance) attys aren't appropriate for the smaller batteries. So, don't go below 2 ohm and if you have any doubts ask on here. If you choose to use the 510 with cartos, get a 510 atty and a drip tip to sample juice.

The big bats

There are big bats for the 808 but, unless you already have a bunch of 808 stuff, there's no reason to get them. The main players in this category are the eGo and Riva. The Riva is really a high quality knock off of the eGo. Some say it's better. Hands down, I'll say go with a big bat. The battery life will be at least 6 hours and for most people it's significantly longer. They aren't all that big. They are about the size of a Sharpie.

One mod I will mention here is the e-power. It's styled like the eGo, a little bigger around but, it uses generic 14500 batteries that are a lot cheaper to replace. If you live in a city of any size, you can probably buy them locally. However, because it's a little bigger some of the attachments for the eGo like the new Turbine Tank won't work on it. Those are in the minority though.

What new people don't think about

All of this stuff can malfunction and you can't just run up to Wal-Mart and get another one. You need to keep plenty of juice on hand. However, depending on what you use, you need to keep extra atomizers (attys), cartos, batteries, and battery chargers around as well. It's best to have a backup for whatever you're using even if it's not your favorite.

Still say liberty-flights. The riva 510 is about the best and has a 3 month warrenty. I have been using mine since Sept and still going strong.
Dripping does give the best flavor, but has a higher learning curve and can be very time consuming and messy. It is probably best to get a good kit and start with what it has to offer. You can try dripping with those, your options are not limited. Ecigs don't have to cost an arm and a leg to find the best. You just need to know where to look

I'd go with the basic ego kit from Liberty Flights for $30. It comes with attys and carts so get two boxes of 2.0 cartomizer if they have them in stock. Before you get any other hardware, see if you even like vaping.

Get about 30 ml of juice.

The first juice I tried is the first juice I'm still using. Nuport juice from nhalers. The nhale/xhale. Tried many others but this does it for my Newport fix.

You can and will add to this in the next few weeks and months. But this is everything you need to get started with vaping.

Good luck!

Ah, if you just want to drip and not mess with carts and cartos...then it's easy :)
Start with a good quality stock battery like the eGo or Riva USB.
Get a variety of atomizers and adapters for them so they fit your battery.
Get some nice drip tips.
Get some liquids

And you're in business :)

If you want to go high or variable voltages, you'll need to look at mods. Build your own, or order one from someone here at ECF that builds them :)

You won't know till you try it. Personally I hate dripping, I only do it to test juice. Other's love it. I find carts and attys a PITA, others love that. I like carts, other's hate them. You get the idea.

With a basic starter kit, cartomizers and maybe a drip tip you can drip, use carts & atty and cartomizers. As far as things breaking, find a vendor close by just in case. I get things from nhaler the next day because he ships fast and we're in the same state.

well ive tried vaping before i just like the design of the smaller actuall cigarette size and shape not cigar black and mild but idk id probably prefer something more portable but with good battery life which might be hard to find all in one but thats a good sum of what I was exactly looking for idk. Is it a lot more expensive buying prefilled juice than actually trying to buy and mod to drip yourself?

To a degree, the size of the pv is determined by life of the battery. But not always. My ego with a carto is 4 1/2" long. My Mom's Kr808 XL with a carto is 5 1/2" long. My 510 with a carto is about 5" long.

Don't be put off about filling the cartos. You just pop the end off of the carto and drip some juice in. It takes about 10 seconds.

You can get a nice KR808 or 510 with a pcc (personal charge case) and it keeps the battery charged for 2-3 charges. That way you can get one that is shorter. I have a 510 that I like and my Mom has a KR808 that she likes. But if you do that, get a PCCC and maybe an extra battery.

If your not comfortable filling carts, try the prefilled carts for awhile. See how it goes.

Good luck!

Riva 510 from LF is a no-brainer starter kit for the money.
You get 2 units that will more than last all day and some juice for about price of a carton of Marl. (in Ind. anyway)

I agree. But some people really want one that looks like a cig. Hay, whatever gets you to quit! I LOVE my ego! But I won a 510 from Rocky Mountain Vapors and I really like that little thing! I wanted something that I can take shopping or to put in my gym bag when I go to the gym. The hit is pretty great on it too. I just got it but I'm definitely going to get a pcc. I didn't time the battery but I don't think they're too long.

On prefilled vs packing my own cartomizers.

I do a bit of both on the KR808D-1 platform.
I find that for the kind of vaping I do, the cost is very similar.

Now, if I have vacation or an easy weekend where I can sit around and vape all day...I'll definately get myself some cartos and a few bottle of premier juice to enjoy. When 'vaping all day'....I definitely save money (and get more/better flavors) filling my own cartos.

There's not quite as much variety on juices and flavors for the prefilled ones. On the plus side, full carto's tend to cost about the same as empty ones, and if they are really packed tight with juice, a five pack of KR808D-1 cartos can hold close to 10ml of juice! If you do the math...that's roughly like a 1.25 packs of cigarettes per cartomizer (in terms of numbers of puffs).

Several places have good quality prefilled KR cartos. www.vapesafe.com has good ones for a great price right now. Electronic Cigarette | Affordable, Only $59 | 100% FREE Shipping! stocks good quality ones. Vapor4Life-Because it's your life - E-Cigarettes/Smoking Alternatives takes much pride in offering top quality prefills, and there are others as well. I try a little from them all and watch for the sales myself :)

510 cartos are harder to find prefilled, and they don't hold quite as much as KR808D-1 cartos, but...they do have a variety of really fine cartomizers to choose from for 510 type batteries.

With all that in mind...while I've moved on to getting liquids and blank cartos for more variety in flavors, I still keep a small stash of prefills at all times :) I love how they come blister or pill-pad wrapped...if a friend or guest wants to try it I can give them a fresh sterile one to vape on :)

Summary:
Grab a variety pack of some prefilled cartomizers. See how you like them. Bottom line on value...I figure there's not much difference in cost with this and buying juice and blanks unless you start vaping over 3-5ml a day. At that point...YES, if you have the time and will for it, you might want to consider getting things in bulk, loading your own carts/cartos, and doing a little more DIY stuff with your juices (I.E. ordering stronger than you vape and cutting it with PG or VG to stretch it further...or even making your own juice from scratch).

On battery life:
KR808D-1 batteries pack a few more millamps than the 510s at similar lengths, but they also burn slightly hotter, which means they'll probably last similar amounts of time depending on what kind of attys/carts you're using.

In general, if you want prefills...KR808-D1 for sure.
Otherwise, they're going to be a similar experience and price-range.

The 510 has a few more goodies out for it...like units that can charge more than one battery at once.

Both platforms offer tiny mini, regular, or long batteries in manual or auto.
Both come in various colors (510 probably has more colors to choose from).

On these small cig shaped batteries, I slightly favor the KR808D-1 because I like the 3.4 - 3.7v on the cartos (2.4ohm Fluxomizer) I use, where 510 is gonna be more like 3.2 - 3.4v That's just me tho'...
