Well I picked up a VV Woodvil in the classies the other day and was really excited, but unfortunately it arrived with a large crack in the bottom which makes the door so loose that if you slide the door down it falls right off. Can this be fixed if will it never be the same? I'm worried mostly because it's right where the bottom spring is attached and puts pressure on the area, which is what I think caused the crack. Looks like it's been there awhile, but I don't think doots has used it for awhile. It was sent packaged very well and there is not any scuffs that look like it was dropped so I believe it probably was just from the pressure of the batteries on the spring and not enough feed & wax over time. He's willing to give me my money back, but I wanted to ask the collective group if you think it can be fixed to be functionally good or will any repair eventually just fail because it's in an area that receives pressure from the batteries & spring?

The good news is that I tested it and the VV Chip, button and switch still all work with a voltage meter and some carefully placed batteries. So if the crack can be epoxied back together or something done that will fix it permanently, it will still be a good VV Woodvil. I just don't know enough about woodworking to know if it's not that big of a deal and nothing a bit of wood glue couldn't fix or if it's better to just get my money back because this is going to be nothing but a problem VV Woodvil from now on.

I'll PM Rob also to see if he can fix it.

Definitely ask Rob what he thinks and if there is any repair that can be done that would both work and hold. That looks like a major split.

If that's the one I think it is, and knowing what you paid for it, if I were me I would be doing everything I could to return it. That condition issue should have been disclosed in the ad, and I don't recall that it was. You should also PM one of the classifieds moderators for input.

I want a VV Woodville too - but not that bad. :(

hmmm...

Condition: Good

Known Flaws: NONE

 You have got to be kidding me.

Ken, if you go back and take a look at the photos, in one of them you can see the crack is there. Not enough to make it plainly visible - low quality images and in another the bottom of the Woodvillle is conveniently "missing" - but you can tell that was the condition it was in before it was shipped and at the time the ad was posted.

Do yourself a favor and grab a copy of those images while this is getting sorted out. I'm grabbing a copy of them right now if you don't get to them soon enough.

That's painful to look at. - I know how lucky I was to get a VVW on sale night. Until the SL Grand came out, I found absolutely no reason to use any other PV day in and day out. I'm going to send mine for the spa treatment next week so I can see it like the day it was new again. I'll think positive thoughts on your behalf that a fix is possible for yours

If you can press the wood together at the crack, you should be able to repair it. There is multitude of adhesives you could use, but some version of Hot Stuff ( cyanoacrylate) as seen here: Hot Stuff Instant CA Glue, 2 Ounces - - Amazon.com could prove to be the most invisible repair. Looks like that end grain could use a few coats of sealer as well. I would hope a substantial discount would be afforded you if you don't return it.

the vv's were more susceptible to this because it gets pretty thin right there below the battery. I have one and it cracked similar to this when I was trying to make my door tight. crazy glue will fix it right up. flush it clean so theirs no juice in the wood at the crack and then dry it well at the crack first, use a thin ca and clamp it lightly for a bit and she should be fine. may need to sand it a bit to make it invisible but structurally it will be close to as strong as it originally was.

To everyone concerned:

I sold Ken the mod. I didnt know about the crack in the bottom.. Never look at the bottom and had no reason to know it had a crack..

Ken has sent me a tracking number and I have refunded his purchase already with apologies attached..

So I am sorry for his experience and Ken's disappointment, and had I known of the flaw, I would never had listed it to begin with..

I will fix this issue with wood glue and a clamp and hopefully continue to use it for many more years to come, The mod has always performed well.....

awe, poor shunned woodvil, what a sad thing to see... I can certainly see why you're not happy with it of course, but now I really want to adopt this thing and give it some tlc :p , upgrade it from 15 watts to 60, repair and refinish it, maybe give her a new door, a new larger 510 base... theres no such thing as a bad woodvil :)

turbocad5. Contact Doods. As soon as you do all that I'll buy it off you. :p

How would you upgrade it to 60watts? is there a newer chip of the same size that would fit where the old one was? or are you talking about one of your complete makeovers where there isn't much left of the original when you're done? :D
