So I'm looking into adding an internal charger to a nicostick, like I've said in an earlier post. I've been looking around online, and all I see is the hazards of doing this wrong.

So the question is; If I'm using a protected Li-ion bat do I have to build some sort of shut-off mechanism so I don't overcharge the battery? Or will the protected bat save me the trouble of having to do this?

Yes. But a MAX1811 or MAX1555 charger chips are cheap and will give you protection on both sides (keeping you from trying to charge with a source voltage *lower* than the battery voltage). Although the example circuit calls for some additional components, they're not really needed and you really only need to make 3 connection (4 if you want to hook up a "charging" led). Really the biggest problem is that the chips (especially the 1555) are so small. Or you can strip the board out of a DigiPower pack and get it all in one nice (pretty small) package, plus a little Li-Poly flatpack for a bonus.

Don't just hook the +5V USB lead to your battery positive and trust the protection PCB to cut it off. Bad Things can happen.

By Digipower pack you mean something like this right?
