Aren't you supposed to dispose of *all* batteries with some "battery disposal" facility, such as the facilities they have at Home Depot for disposing of those mercury-containing lightbulbs? batteries do contain some very dangerous chemicals, after all.

Short of some special facility, I'd think burial might be the safest bet, but that risks poisoning the groundwater, and what if some dog digs it up? Dead dog?

If my battery was to vent what should I do with it would be safe to put it in the bin?

If you had the Unlikely event of a Battery Venting, the First Thing you should Think about is what am I going to do if my PV becomes to Hot to Hold. Where am I going to put it Down?

The Best place would be Outside on something Like Concrete.

Putting a Battery that has just failed in a Trash Bin with other Things that could Catch on Fire (or even the Bin Itself) would be a Bad Choice.

Also, you should wait a Good 15 or 30 Minutes before you try to Handle your PV. It can be Hot and the Battery could Smolder for awhile after the Initial Vent.

A Venting Battery is Very Rare. But it is Good you are Thinking about things even if the Chances of it Happening are Extremely Small.
