Ok, I'm English and this discussion is throwing me completely.

I'm reading that this store is a pharmacy but it used to sell cigarettes and it still sells alcohol...

What the heck?!?!

Most pharmacies in the US sell cigarettes, and most also now sell alcohol, at least beer and wine; it varies a lot by state -- in Michigan, you can buy hard liquor in groceries and pharmacies, not just in "party stores", but here in Georgia, you can only buy hard liquor in "package stores."

CVS is just succumbing to ANTZ-pressure with their recent move to eliminate all tobacco sales, and yes they include e-cigs for some stupid reason -- probably because BP doesn't get a piece of the action from e-cigs, only from their totally ineffectual NRT products.

So... at least in 'the states', we have places that we call a pharmacy, but it's not just a pharmacy... they have much much more... it's a convenience type store with pharmacy,... or the other way around, depending on what you normally go there for. Whether or not they have drinking alcohol, really depends on the local law and if they were able to buy a license, but until recently they all basically sold cigarettes as that was a 'staple' to get people through the door in hopes of them buying other things. I don't think it's any weirder than petrol/gas stations selling lighters.

Alcohol when used in moderation isn't harmful over the long term; long term smoking, even in moderation, is...

It's wasn't a question regarding harm, just the concept of either being sold in a pharmacy.

Ok, I know that "tonic wine" for adults (I think it was15% ABV) and a product given to children when they were teething/fractious called "Gripe Water" (??ABV but definitely contained alcohol) used to be sold in chemists (pharmacies) in the UK. And some would also sell herbal/tobacco free cigarettes, but regular beer or cigarettes being sold in one is a new to me.

Most pharmacies in the US sell cigarettes, and most also now sell alcohol, at least beer and wine; it varies a lot by state -- in Michigan, you can buy hard liquor in groceries and pharmacies, not just in "party stores", but here in Georgia, you can only buy hard liquor in "package stores."...

Hun, you now need to explain to this Limey what a "party store" and a "package store" is!

Aha, I understand what a convenience store is... And, yeah, the whole lighter/petrol station thing is odd to me too :)

As someone once said, "England and America are two countries divided by a common language" ;)

My thanks go out to each of you

Hehe... when I first moved to Michigan and heard about "party stores," I was wistfully envisioning someplace to buy all sorts of illicit goodies. :D But alas, it's just a store that sells every kind of booze you can shake a stick at. Same here in GA for a package store, but package stores are weird, because GA laws on alcohol are very weird; one half of the store is devoted to beer and wine, all different kinds; the other half, usually with some sort of solid barrier and door, but not always, sells only hard liquor. But speaking of weird laws on alcohol... GA only just repealed its "no sunday sales" THIS YEAR. When I first moved back home from Michigan and ran into that no sunday sales which I had forgotten about, I had a couple of much too-dry sundays. :D That was, of course, before I got sober, which was only 2 years after I moved back to GA.

Just so you know...

'party store' = the 'off license' or offie.

A 'package store' is a special kind of 'party store' in areas where you can't just go in to any place to buy beer and/or wine and/or liquor. Some states/cities/towns have special restrictions on each class of drink. You might find beer at the grocer, but need to go somewhere special for wine or liquor, or find beer and wine at the grocer, but not liquor etc.

We also still have 'dry counties' in the U.S., where you aren't allowed to possess or drink alcohol (except for under special circumstances)... there aren't many, but they still exist.

Yup,... well, if you didn't hear the news... the Sunday sales only after 12 or whatever was finally removed,... now to just get rid of this stupid 'not after 2AM' law. The only time I ever drank in the morning was a few times when I worked midnight's and the team would have a few drinks after, but not letting me buy it for private consumption elsewhere just feels weird. "We the decision makers have deemed that it's OK to drink out at a bar (pub) at 1AM when it's already dark out, and you are probably already tired too... and we don't require you to have a designated driver... but you may NOT even BUY alcohol to drive home with while NOT intoxicated before 12 (on Sundays, every other day is fine though)."

Wow... I remember when we lived in Pontiac, in '88-'90, many many times frantically driving over to Meijers so I could get beer before they stopped selling it at 11:45pm. In fact, I learned to drive on ice in Meijers' parking lot on one such occasion. On ice...brakes bad. Creeping very very slowly with hands LIGHTLY on the steering wheel, good. :D Of course now that I'm back in Ga, I laugh at the igmos closing the city down when we get any sort of white precipitation -- often ice, down here. But if you haven't learned to drive in snow and ice... best stay home. Down here it usually melts really fast, because the ground doesn't freeze.

Back to the CVS Vape Alarm topic... kind of... you may notice if you slide your hand along the bottom of the anti-theft pillars, that there is a switch... and yes, it does what you suspect. Every one I have flipped has been in a recessed opening, but very obvious even if just going by feel. Oh, but not the button... don't press that one.

I would be interested to find out of repeat visits with the istick cause the same alert (before and after you just test that little switch). Some manufacturers have placed the security tags within devices... but I would be shocked if the istick had one in it... my guess is a perfectly created coil could be the culprit (if it's related to the istick at all). The anti-theft systems are pre-cursers to RFID and not actually RFID. They are basically the RF part and use most of the same tech as RFID, but there is no actual ID to be read. It's just looking for the reaction to the generated signal versus data in a coherent response.

@JimmyDB - By Jove, you speak English! Do people know you're bilingual?;)

@Andria - So they don't sell balloons, streamers or silly hats at a party store, then? That's a disappointment :( Sunday sales only from this year? Heck, I don't even drink that often but that would have driven me crazy! :D

Apologies to OP for (temporarily) derailing the thread. I'll stick to the topic from now on in.

I just had to run over to CVS for something for my boy's flu...and upon entering I had my trusty iStick in my pocket and walked through the doors/sensors "you have triggered CVS' inventory tracking system alert" alarm goes off...a "waive" to my favorite clerk and "oh it's probably my vape" got a "I work retail and don't give a .er you know nod" :) and I set it off exiting the store too...

I noticed no shelving behind the counters..they'd removed the ciggies and put patches/gum there last month or so..now it's posters about CVS' wanting to be Tobacco free.

interesting.:vapor:

Any update on if this has happened again? I was going to stop at a CVS on my way back from the grocery store a little while back and forgot...
