I got a mod and batterys in a trade today when I got home I looked and the top of the batterys is pushed in a little bit it's like he cranked a mechmod to hard on it and the 510 smooched it are they still safe to use if I'm using purely regulated there vtc6 18650s
I don't have an answer other than to say I have a set that is slightly dimpled from normal use is a dual 18650 regulated mod. I'm pretty sure that as long as the button is nowhere near touching anything underneath it it's ok. Mine are just very slightly depressed and I am relatively comfortable with their safety, for now.
I'm curious to see if we can get a definitive answer about this, maybe with some pictures. My phone doesn't focus upclose so I can't post a shot of mine...

Even if they didn't look like THAT, I'd say replace them. I don't like getting used batteries in ANY mod, because I have no way of establishing their genuineness and etc.

For more on battery care, safety, and authentic sellers, a little light reading:

I believe your question may also be: is there something in the mod causing this to happen? I suppose it's a real possibility, but it could be your seller just handled his batteries poorly, not the mod itself.

If it were me, I'd proceed cautiously, give the thing a good clean, and keep a very sharp eye on your NEW batteries for wear and tear. It is possible the damage was caused by a drop or the charger or something else, but I would just be cautious regarding the entire thing, and I would USE with caution. You may be okay, but if it's the equipment itself that is eating batteries, I would probably discontinue use of the mod.

Best of luck,

Anna

The positive pole of the battery (the one on the left) is significantly too damaged to use again.

Batteries are intentionally designed to have a "weak spot" at the positive pole, sort of like a pressure release valve. If a battery needs to vent gas from abusive use, that weak spot breaks to allow the release of gas; otherwise the battery could explode with the buildup of accumulated gas much like a pipe bomb. The top of the battery shown in your pic is damaged to the point that the weak spot under the flat piece of metal may be compromised so the battery can't vent properly, so it has a higher probability to explode should the battery become short-circuited.

Bottom line: There is obvious and significant external damage to your battery. There is no way to know for sure how much internal damage a battery has received. As someone said before me: "When in doubt...". $6 - $10 for a new battery is a small price to pay for peace of mind when compared to the catastrophic damage a battery in thermal runaway can cause.

I wouldn't use them either.

You're under no obligation to do so, but you should consider a conversation with the individual you got them from. He/she may not realize the risk they face if they're continuing to abuse li-ion batteries. Someone could get hurt.

What kind of mod? The positive side looks like damage from a faux hybrid being wrenched down too hard.
OP is using a regulated mod. Since he sounds like he is a novice, I doubt that he would be aware if his friend is using a 510 or faux hybrid mech. Whatever his friend was using, he ruined those batteries and should never have given them to anyone. With friends like that, who needs enemies?
